Halloween is a scary holiday for people trying to lose weight. All that 'bite-sized' candy, those crazy parties loaded with drinks and sweets and workplace candy dishes filled the brim with colorful little diet destroyers.
So, what can you do? Hide? Take a week off work and spend it in the gym instead? Put a "no trick-or-treat" sign on your door?
Luckily, you don't need to go to those extreme lengths in order to resist the urge to splurge on Halloween treats -- but you do need to have a plan to help you say "No" to all the goodies that will be lurking as Halloween approaches.
If limiting yourself to just one bite-sized treat a day is too much temptation for your sweet tooth, then play it safe and keep all candy out of your house. That's easier said than done, especially if you have kids who take part in all the Halloween festivities.
One way to reduce the candy that comes into your house is to use the buddy system.
If you have a friend, neighbor or relative that you trust and who doesn't share the same pitfalls to sweets as you, ask them if they would be willing to store your little trick-or-treater's candy.
That may sound drastic, but "out of sight, out of mind" isn't just a phrase when it comes to candy, sweets and other temptations that can throw your diet into a tailspin.
Replace the bad with the good. Foods such as almonds, grapes, cherries and other healthy alternatives are small enough to replace those bite-sized chocolaty snacks. So, grab a handful and eat up!
They are also the perfect alternative at work when your co-workers bring those leftover bags of goodies.
In fact, try using the buddy system at work, as well.
If you have a work buddy who is willing to join you in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, be sure to enlist and encourage them to join you in saying "No" to the sweets. It's always better to have someone who is willing to share your goal than to go it alone.
If you're going to indulge, be selective. Look at it as a date.
If you are willing to spend an evening with someone, you want them to be the best quality person you can find. In the same way, if you're willing to eat candy, make sure it's the best possible candy you can eat.
For instance, dark chocolate has both antioxidants and less sugar than traditional milk chocolate.
Whatever your "top of the line" type of candy is, only eat that and only eat it in moderation. Too much of anything is still just too much.
Halloween is more than just a candy holiday
Halloween can be a scary time for some people going it alone, and also for those without a plan to counteract the temptations of the season. Outside of eating candy, there are many other things you can do to enjoy the season.
Visit a haunted house, take a hay ride, even or carve a pumpkin. All these things remain in the spirit of Halloween but won't compromise your figure, one bit.
Embrace your fears and try boot camp
Does the thought of trying out a boot camp scare you more than the ghosts and goblins that ring your doorbell on Halloween night?
We understand that the words 'boot camp' have a lot of negative, scary connotations associated with them - BUT - they have a lot of positive associations, too! Like all the other women who have changed their lives, regained the self esteem, improved their health, gotten off medication and made great new friends.
That's what the women in our classes think of, when they hear the words "boot camp."
