With a recent pub crawl, rookie camp, and football clinics, one would never believe that the official start of the flag football season is still weeks away. But even though it is weeks away, one thing is certain, they’re baaaaaaaack!
By far, 2011 marked the most successful season that the SDAFFL has ever had.
Not only did they experience incredible growth in number of players and receive a Nicky award for Outstanding Sports Organization, the SDAFFL also took the national championship at Gay Bowl XI in Houston, Texas, in October.
With the 2012 season just a few weeks away, SDAFFL Commissioner Mike Paganelli promises an even bigger and better season, with a repeat performance in Denver for Gay Bowl XII.
"Wait ‘til you see what we do this year," Paginelli said. "We are expecting another surge in players, and to support this growth, we’ve added three additional teams, going from 13 to 16 total teams.
"We also added a Football Operations Board position this year, filled by SDAFFL veteran Todd Kerr," he continued. "And, to support the huge interest demonstrated by players [wishing] to help, we’ve added sub committees to help the league and its efforts this season."
This coming weekend is the 2012 Draft Party weekend, with the second of two clinics Saturday morning, and the draft and team announcements party on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012.
Billed as one of the best events of the season, the much-hyped draft party at Bourbon Street will give a "first look" at 2012 teams! Friends and family are encouraged to attend, to cheer the teams on. Festivities begin at 2 pm.
After the announcement of teams, four weeks of practice commence, with teams raring to go and ready to show their stuff on Opening Day in March.
If you’re still interested in playing this season, it may not be too late. The first step would be to register at www.sdaffl.com.
If we have already reached capacity, you may be placed on a waiting list. However, even if you do, you should still also attend this last clinic (on Saturday) so you can be evaluated by team captains, and possibly drafted on to a team.
The SDAFFL is an all inclusive league, and welcomes all levels.
Clinics are being held at Cleator Community Park, located at 2314 Famosa Blvd, San Diego, CA 92107, and start at 8:30 am, sharp.
The regular season begins Saturday, March 10, 2012.
Come watch a game and show your support. See why the SDAFFL is as popular as it is! Teams play every Saturday at 9:00 a.m., 10:30 am and 12 pm, at Doyle Park and Rec Center located at 8175 Regents Road, San Diego, CA 92122.
