SAN DIEGO -- The Fertility Specialists Medical Group (FSMG) is partnering with the Greater San Diego Business Association (GSDBA) to host four free events during the upcoming National Infertility Awareness Week, April 22-28, 2012.

The theme of this year's series -- "Don't Ignore Infertility" -- is geared towards both straight and same-sex couples and encourages struggling couples to explore the many options available to them.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), approximately seven million women aged 15 to 44 will need help to conceive, and same-sex couples face additional challenges.

The FSMG will offer professional support and guidance to all in need.

Infertility also causes emotional distress, regardless of the sexual orientation of the couple seeking parentage. With regards to same-sex couples, women may need help with ovulation cycles for insemination and men may need help coordinating the complex process of surrogacy. Heterosexual couples often face a myriad of other issues.

To help combat these and other infertility issues, four events will be offered free of charge to the general public:

• Infertility Diagnosis. "Is it time to seek help?" Diagnosis is the first step toward overcoming infertility. Attendees can save $250 on an initial consultation at this public event that explores the questions and signs of infertility. Light refreshments. Monday, April 23, 5:45-7:00 pm.
• Complementary Therapy. "Does acupuncture really help?" Studies show that acupuncture, yoga, meditation, and nutrition can improve the chances of conception. This event, led by Julie Chang, L.Ac., introduces the practice to patients. Raffle prizes. Tuesday, April 24, 5:45-6:45 pm.
• Treatment Options. "Is in vitro fertilization the only choice?" Fertility treatment depends on diagnosis and need. This public event examines the range of options available, including those specific to gay and lesbian needs. Light refreshments. Wednesday, April 25, 5:45-7:00 pm.
• Fertility Lab Magic. "What goes on behind the scenes?" FSMG's IVF Laboratory selects sperm, fertilizes eggs, and tests embryos for viability. This event uncovers the science and technology behind the magic that helps enable conception. Raffle prizes. Thursday, April 26, 5:45-7:00 pm.
