How to break five unhealthy habits this Spring
The blame game
Even children blame others when they are caught doing something they aren't supposed to do; and so it is with adults, as well. If you find that your first line of defense is to blame someone else for your issues, shortcomings, or circumstances, what you're really doing is selling yourself short.
You have control of your life. Since that is the case, it's best to take responsibility for your own actions. Blaming others won't help you assess your role in helping yourself. You'll find that if you place blame with others frequently, that you tend to stay in the same situation over and over again. In order to take control, begin by taking ownership of your life and actions.
Being defensive is a sure-fire way to create chaos in situations where there isn't a need. Finding yourself in circular conversations that end in frustration more often than not, may mean that you are being too defensive with others.
Realize that you don't need to 'fight back' if you don't agree with someone, even if their assessment involves you. Simply listen, state your concerns or make a statement, and let it go.
If you are an adventurous person, you are going to try a lot of things. It’s almost impossible to keep up with everything, so you’ll have to choose which adventures to keep up with, and which ones to give up, that’s ok. In fact, it’s really good. However, if you quit everything you try just because it gets hard, then quitting is not a good solution.
Perseverance is an important trait that leads to more success and happiness. Before taking on a new activity, assess the level of commitment it will take of you. Factor in the time, money, level of interest, emotional and physical energy that will be spent in pursuit of the goal or activity. If it's just too much to take on, then don't. Otherwise, if you decide to do it, stick to it.
Let go of lack –
It’s easy to notice the things that you want and don’t have, whether it’s a car, home, partner, job … the fact is, the more you focus on what you don’t have, the longer it’s going to take you to get what you want.
Change your focus. Focus on the things that make you happy, even if it’s on a completely different topic. Focus on the sunset, and time spent with great friends, and you will attract more of what you feel. So do everything you can to feel good. Appreciate what you do have and you will get more of it.
What do you really want? Even if your goals feel really big, don’t just settle for smaller outcomes because it seems easier, although you may want to break a big goal into many smaller ones.
For instance, if you want to lose 50 lbs, don’t just settle for 5 lbs of weight loss because 50 lbs seems too hard. Instead, break 50 lbs down into a goal of losing 1-2 lbs a week. Doesn’t that feel more manageable? And, there’s no reason to settle. You can keep losing 1-2 lbs a week until you reach what you really want – 50 lbs of fat loss!
Make it happen this Spring
Focus on the things and people that make you feel happy. Be choosey with your time and the people you allow in your life. Determine what you really want and go for it!
