Professional soccer player Robbie Rogers, in his first television interview since coming out earlier this year, describes the feeling of being gay and closeted in professional sports, and of going to work each day hoping none of his teammates figure out that he is gay.

“If that happens, you can’t play the sport that you love,” he said.

WASHINGTON -- The National Football League met with LGBT rights groups last week about the push to end homophobia in sports, at a time when speculation increases over whether the first gay player will soon come out in professional athletics.

"I’m really struggling with feeling lonely -- nighttime is the worst. I dread going to bed knowing that I will just lay there, feeling horrible and alone, and think for hours. During the day I am better because I have work and friends to keep me distracted. At night, though, I end up calling people that aren't good for me, hook up with the wrong people, or drink too much just to make myself feel better. I want to be at a place where I am OK with being alone. Where do I even start?" – Lonely in San Diego
