A Side of Sports in San Diego: SDAFFL, AFCSL and SD Surge wrap up their seasons & celebrate

Were you picked on as a kid? Maybe never picked until last for sport teams in school? Did you really love a sport, but fall behind early or get injured, only to have your parents pull you -- and you never got to live up to your full potential?

Was there a sport you always wanted to try but your parents either didn't have the money or discouraged you from participating? Were you too afraid to try out? Or maybe you just didn't fit in?

If any of these are true, odds are you are in pretty good company right here in the San Diego LGBT community. We've all been there.

SDAFFL Finale: A champion is crowned

There was something different about waking up this past Saturday. First it was strange that I was preparing to go to the fields, but I was putting on flip-flops instead of packing my cleats. I also opted for a pair of green cut-off shorts instead of my usual Saturday uniform - gray shorts with ‘BANGERS’ emblazoned across the butt.

The "something" different was that I was getting ready to head to the fields -- that welcomed me for the last ten weeks or so -- for what would be the last day of the football season.

SDAFFL Weeks Nine & Ten: A double-header Saturday

The league returned this past week from an unexpected league-wide BYE. And because the fields were unavailable that previous week, games from week's nine and ten had to be played on the same day. This meant that all but two teams played twice.

"Double-Header Saturday," as many called it, also marked the end of the regular season. As a result, the spectators who'd been promising friends all season long they’d see at least one game, finally showed up in droves.

Chicago Bulls center Joakim Noah hurls anti-gay slur at Heat fan

MIAMI -- Just weeks after L.A. Lakers star Kobe Bryant was fined $100,000 and disciplined for screaming an anti-gay slur at a referee, and just days after the NBA began broadcasting public-service ads condemning such hate speech, Chicago Bulls center Joakim Noah used the anti-gay "F" word in response to a heckling Heat fan.

The Eastern Conference playoff game in Miami was broadcast nationally on TNT, and its cameras caught the incident on camera.
