SAN DIEGO -- In an effort to honor every San Diegan who has ever served in the military services in celebration of the capture and death of Osama bin Laden, the San Diego Padres are offering two free tickets to tonight's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at 7 pm.

The announcement came through their Facebook page.

SDAFFL's Ricky Cervantes: Why I play

Last year, I joined the San Diego American Flag Football League (SDAFFL).

I wanted to meet new people. I wanted to be a part of a team. I wanted to expand my athleticism.

Being a part of this league has been one of the best experiences of my life and has been so much fun. What I did not realize when I joined the league was that I would be able to participate in activities that give back to the community.

At our games last Saturday, members of the 12 teams that make up the league really did an amazing thing.

SDAFFL Week Seven: The season may be half over, but it's still the source of high drama

Going into week seven, the match-ups were anything but expected.

With only one team performing to expectations (top-seeded Bourbon Street Storm continued to dominate with another blow-out win), there were a few other standout games with outcomes that can be described as no less than incredibly dramatic!

Pat Griffin's LGBT Sport Blog: Are the new Olympic Committee rules for women fair and balanced?

On April 5 the International Olympic Committee released new rules for determining whether or not women who have higher than usual levels of naturally-produced testosterone will be eligible to compete in women’s sports.

Though the IOC denies it, it seems likely that this clarification is motivated by the embarrassing and shameful handling of the challenge to South African runner, Caster Semenya, two years ago at the World Championships.

SDAFFL Week Six: Return from first break marks some new beginnings and a few heartbreaks

SDAFFL players and their "supporters" returned to regular play this past Saturday, after having a well-deserved week off. Renewed from the break, the return marked a new beginning for some teams, and was business as usual for others.

Facing a potential 0-5 record, the True North Aztecs came out with a vengeance against the R Gang Bangers, beating them, 46-12.

Former NBA player John Amaechi - who is also gay - responds to Bryant

The NBA fined Kobe Bryant $100,000 Tuesday night after he was caught on camera throwing an anti-gay slur at a referee after being fouled in a game against the Phoenix Suns. Bryant has since given what some don't agree to be an apology and says he will appeal the fine.

Kobe Bryant isn’t some great, bigoted monster, as some have implied, but he isn’t the innocent victim of some overblown one-off incident about a word that’s “not even that bad,” either.

SDAFFL football teams reach out to community for help bringing joy to children this Easter

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego American Flag Football League (SDAFFL) has always made it a part of its mission to give back to the community.

This year they are launching their first annual Easter Basket Drive, which kicked off this week and will run through Saturday, April 23, 2011.

The drive is in support of the annual Trolley Barn Park Easter Egg Hunt, which will take place at 1pm on Easter Sunday (April 24) on Adams Ave (at Georgia St) in Normal Heights.

Lakers, NBA to work with GLAAD to address anti-gay slurs in basketball

LOS ANGELES – Days after basketball superstar Kobe Bryant was caught during a telecast yelling an anti-gay slur at a referee, the Los Angeles Lakers and the NBA have agreed to work with GLAAD to educate fans about the harms of hurtful language.

The Lakers joined GLAAD in issuing a release regarding Kobe Bryant’s use of the anti-gay slur “f*ggot” during a game this week and committing to address homophobic remarks in the sport.

"What happened in Tuesday night's game is not representative of what the Lakers stand for," Lakers spokesman John Black said.

SDAFFL: Supporters "heart" their football jocks

This past week SDAFFL members enjoyed what many believed to be a much-needed break.

Some multi-sport jocks used the break to attend sports tournaments in other cities, while others made the annual "mecca-like" trek to Palm Springs for a bit of hedonism and celebration. Others simply used the break to rest their bodies in preparation for the next few weeks of play.

However it was spent, just about everyone enjoyed the time off; everyone except for arguably a few individuals -- SDAFFL’s own "Athletic Supporters" -- an unofficial league, in and of itself.
