Anti-gay slur backfires; NBA fines Kobe Bryant $100,000

With swift justice following an even quicker rebuke, the NBA today fined Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant $100,000 for screaming an anti-gay slur at a referee.

NBA Commissioner David Stern issued a statement after GLAAD and the Human Rights Campaign spoke out against Bryant's remarks and contacted NBA officials.

"Kobe Bryant's comment during last night's game was offensive and inexcusable,” Stern said.

Kobe Bryant "apologizes" after gay slur stirs up hornet's nest

LOS ANGELES -- L.A. Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant today is acting like he is on "Dancing With The Stars" as he tries to two-step past a homophobic slur that has gotten him into hot water with the LGBT community.

During the third quarter of the Lakers game against the San Antonio Spurs, Kobe got a technical foul and was clearly upset with the NBA refs.

Bryant shouted at referee Bennie Adams, appearing to call him a "F*cking f*ggot."

The Lakers said they can't confirm what was said, but it looks obvious. A TV announcer even said, "You might wanna take the cameras off of him."

SDAFFL Week Four: Rookies step up as the league goes into its first, much-needed season break

It’s four weeks into a ten-week season, and most of the teams have found their rhythm.

Players who were completely new to the game no longer consider themselves new, and the teams are using their chemistry to their advantage. Rookies are stepping up, and veteran players are trusting and even counting on their rookies to make plays.

"We’ve been fortunate to have key players in the right position, and they’re rookies who want to play well," said Tom Mullen, one of this week's defensive players of the week, and a member of the undefeated Baja Betty's Ball Hawks.

My friend Wyatt Strehlow: The solemn but affirming journey of a local softball legend

Editor's Note: For the last 18 months, Roman Jimenez has penned a sports column for SDGLN called "The Athletic Supporter," only taking a short leave of absence last summer when his friend experienced a downturn in his fight against cancer. After quickly bouncing back for a time, Wyatt sadly succumbed to his disease earlier this week. This is Roman's stirring tribute to his friend and mentor. It is with equal sadness we announce that Roman has decided this will be his final column for SDGLN. He will be truly missed and we wish him all the best in his future endeavors.

SDAFFL Week Three: A little "cheese," and a weekend of firsts

The wet and muddy fields from the previous day’s rain didn’t keep SDAFFL’s weekend warriors from meeting up, tearing it up and hamming it up on the football field.

As the skies cleared and hints of rain subsided, it ended up being a great day for football and an even more beautiful day for team pictures!

In just three short weeks, the pool of undefeated teams has gotten smaller, with only two teams leading the pack: the Bourbon Street Storm and Baja Betty’s Ball Hawks.

Pat Griffin Sports Blog: Weighing the legitimacy of lingerie football

I have not written about the Lingerie Football League because, well, I find it offensive. I am sure not many regular readers will be surprised by this.

The league focuses on everything I find demeaning and insulting about media portrayals of women athletes: They must be perceived as sexy to men to get any ink.

The LFL is predicated on this belief.

Pat Griffin teams with GLSEN to ask "Respect: Are you bringing it?"

Pat Griffin, a longtime expert on homophobia in sports, commentator, educator, and member of the LGBT community, has always been a champion of LGBT athletes. She's also always been one of the first people to call out organizations for disparaging them in any form or fashion.

Just a couple months ago, Griffin teamed with the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) to produce "Changing the Game - the GLSEN Sports Project."

SDAFFL: Week two - the enthusiasm continues

By the looks of it, you couldn’t tell that it was the second week of the flag football season. Teams showed up in their clean, grass-stain free and carefully coordinated uniforms with the same excitement and enthusiasm as if it were opening day.

For a few teams, Saturday’s game meant revenge after losing the week before.

For others, it was trying to maintain the momentum of winning, and for one team, the Bourbon Street Storm, it was their first game after their Bye in week #1.
