San Diego American Flag Football League welcomes new players this weekend

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego American Flag Football League (SDAFFL) is gearing up for another season of "SoCal style gridiron action" and is welcoming new men and women into their ranks.

The season kick-off activities, which began last weekend with the annual pub crawl, will continue this weekend with Rookie Camps for prospective players this Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 22-23.

SDAFFL is one of California's premier 7-on-7 flag football leagues, and is one of the largest such leagues in the nation. Last year, the league included 12 teams with over 170 players participating.

Dirty Cleats: Predictions for NFL's Conference Championships

My picks last week were average. I went 2-2, same as the week before.

Although my pick for the Patriots was wrong, I didn’t care much as it brought me great joy to watch Tom Brady get sacked five times. It brought me even greater joy to watch him hang his head and walk off the field as he suffered his third straight playoff loss in three years.

Whether fans in Boston want to believe it or not, the Patriots and all their glory is a sign of the past. They are a typical high-caliber team on their way out. That's just the way it goes.

Charles Barkley: "God bless gay people"

Former NBA MVP Charles Barkley took time out during a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. before Monday's Celtics-Magic game to speak out against antigay discrimination.

He said: "You know, people try to make it about black and white. He talked about equality for every man, every woman. We have a thing going on now — people discriminating against homosexuality in this country. I love the homosexual people. God bless the gay people. They are great people."

Holiday cheer is giving way to competitive fire in San Diego’s LGBT community, as two of the largest, most-active sports leagues are gearing up for their Spring 2011 seasons.

In the coming weeks, both flag football and softball will be organizing player recruitment drives and setting team rosters for what they both hope will be their biggest seasons yet.

DIRTY CLEATS: Predictions for NFL's Divisional Playoffs

Who dat?

Dat be the Seattle Seahawks!

That was the best game of last weekend and will definitely go down in history as one of the biggest post-season upsets – probably right next to the NY Giants Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots in 2008. That was sweet. I love watching Bill Belichick lose.

Don’t underestimate those Packers. Favre lovers have been hushed as Rodgers and the Pack won their first playoff game since 1997.

Eight teams. Four games. Who will advance?

Here's my Divisional Playoff picks.

The event is open to all ages and doors open at 6 p.m.

Roller Derby has been around for over a century and has seen a myriad of changes over the years. In the 50's and 60's the sport became more like WWF wrestling, with the players staging over-the-top dramatics on the track.

DIRTY CLEATS: Predictions for NFL's Wild Card Weekend

What an ending to a great regular season.

A lot happened in the past week:

  • Favre won’t be returning (I’m guessing he’s serious this time)
  • John Elway is returning to the Broncos (as V.P. of football operations)
  • Mangini was fired from the Browns (but Norv keeps his job ... weird)
  • the Raiders chose not to resign Tom Cable as head coach (another idiot move by owner, Al Davis)
