A tale of three halves: San Diego Armada Rugby Club to tackle Irish this weekend

SAN DIEGO -- It is a commonly held belief that Rugby can trace its origins all the way back to 1823, when a fellow named William Webb Ellis “showed a blatant disregard for the rules of football [soccer]” and shockingly picked up the ball up and began to run with it.

While there are all kinds of problems with this apocryphal theory from a historical perspective, no one really seems to care; or, if anyone did, their concern was mitigated long ago by a few stout pints of beer in the finest of rugby traditions.

LONDON -- The Rugby Football League (RFL) held a reception in parliament last night to launch a campaign to welcome gay fans and players.

The event was hosted by Liberal Democrat MP Greg Mulholland and attended by a number of MPs from all parties and two players from Sheffield Eagles.

Former Great Britain Rugby Union Lions captain Gareth Thomas, who came out last year, was unable to attend due to illness.

ORLANDO -- Nobody bullied Orlando Jordan when he was growing up, at least not physically.

"I didn’t have my books knocked out of my hands when I was walking down the hallway or get shoved in a locker," Jordan said during a recent interview with the San Diego Gay & Lesbian News. "Nobody really messed with me that way."

Flipped Out: D.C. area athletes create their own flippin fun

For three years, Chris Chase and 20 of his friends donned pink uniforms and hit D.C.'s recreational fields as "Belles of the Ball," one of the few openly LGBT teams in the District's sprawling kickball scene. But after the match, when competitors shuffled off to the league's traditional post-game flip cup tournament, Chase's team exited the field. "We made somewhat of an attempt to go to those bars to mingle with the other straight teams," says Chase.  "But most of our team would just go to a gay bar."

COMMENTARY: The tragedy of openly gay MLB player Glenn Burke

I FIRST became aware of Glenn Burke during the Tournament of Champions (TOC) high school basketball tournament. The TOC was Northern California's debutant ball for many great high school players, including former NBA players such as Paul Silas, Phil Chenier and Bill Cartwright.

In 1970, playing for Berkeley High School, Burke helped lead the Yellow Jackets to an undefeated season, a TOC championship, while garnering all-tournament honors.

VIDEO: Transgender basketball player and his coach speak about historic coming out

A George Washington University athlete named Kye Allums came out as a transgender man on Monday, making him the first Division I college basketball player to ever do so while competing.

His coach has stated that he will remain on the women’s team.

In the video clip below, Allums and his coach speak with the media regarding concerns from the NCAA.

“Yes, I am a male on a female team,” Allums says in the video. “I want to be clear about that. I am a transgender male. I feel as if I should have been born male with male parts, but I am biologically female.”
