Rugby star Gareth Thomas backs report on gay hate in school sports

UK athletes including gay rugby legend Gareth Thomas are supporting a new report which found homophobia in schools puts many LGBT students off sport.

The study published today (Oct. 31) by Britain's National Union of Students (NUS) found that almost half of those in college and university who do not participate in any sport at college or university (46.8%) find the culture of sport to be alienating and 41.9% said they had a negative experience at school which has meant that they don’t want to get involved.

Players from Chargers, Lakers, Clippers say a gay teammate would be welcome

SAN DIEGO – Professional athletes on the West Coast almost universally think that a gay teammate would be welcome in the locker room and on the field.

Matt Calkins with the UT San Diego informally surveyed players from the San Diego Chargers, Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers and reports that he found only one athlete who appeared resistant to the idea.

America’s major league sports remain places where openly gay athletes are non-existent.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Orlando Cruz, the first openly gay boxer in the world, won his first fight since coming out recently.

Cruz won a decisive and unanimous decision over Jorge Pazos in a featherweight bout at the Kissimmee Civic Center on Friday night. Judges scored the bout 118-110, 116-111 and 118-110.

The crowd cheered Cruz when he entered the ring, and the Puerto Rican boxer told the media after the fight that he was grateful for the support.

Gay athletes to raise awareness of homophobia in sport

PHILADELPHIA -- Out professional soccer player Joanna Lohman will headlining an event to raise awareness of homophobia and discrimination in sport.

The GO! (Generation Out!) Athletes event will be from 7 to 9 pm EDT on Thursday, Oct. 11, in Bodek Lounge in Houston Hall at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

The event will provide opportunities for the scholar athlete community to come together to hear stories by OUT sports role models. GO! Athletes envisions this relaunch as the first of many awareness-building initiatives to occur across the nation.

Professional boxer Orlando Cruz comes out

History has been made today in the boxing world, as featherweight boxer Orlando Cruz has come out as a "proud gay man."

The Puerto Rican native, 31, told USA Today: "I've been fighting for more than 24 years and as I continue my ascendant career, I want to be true to myself. I want to try to be the best role model I can be for kids who might look into boxing as a sport and a professional career."
