Baseball player's anti-gay slur costs him 3-game suspension, pay donated to GLAAD

NEW YORK -- The Toronto Blue Jays say "no" to homophobic slurs, fining and suspending its star shortstop for writing an anti-gay slur on his eye black.

After meeting with Major League Baseball and the Players Association, Blue Jays officials livestreamed a news conference at Yankee Stadium to announce the punishment and to answer questions as the scandal escalated.

TORONTO, Ontario, Canada — Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Yunel Escobar took to the diamond Saturday during a game with the Boston Red Sox with “You are a faggot” written in Spanish on his eye black strips.

A close-up photo heavily circulated online in social media showed the words “Tu ere maricon” — Spanish for “You’re a faggot” — on the black tape.

Gay Paralympic athlete Lee Pearson wins silver medal

LONDON -- Gay equestrian athlete Lee Pearson has won a silver medal at London 2012.

Winning the second prize at the dressage on Sept. 1, the Briton and his horse Gentleman were pipped to the post by Australian Joann Formosa who made his Paralympic debut.

Pearson came top of his category (Ib), just, on (Aug. 30) but was hampered by poor weather conditions.

But winning the preliminary meant the 38-year-old stood an unassailable advantage over the other competitors.

Pia Sundhage resigns as coach of gold-medal winning U.S. women’s soccer team

Pia Sundhage, the openly lesbian coach of the Olympic champion U.S. women’s soccer team, said Saturday that she was stepping down from her job and moving back to her homeland of Sweden.

SAN DIEGO – A new generation of the O’Malley family, part of baseball royalty long associated with the rival Dodgers, is taking over ownership of the San Diego Padres.

Four cousins representing the O’Malley and Seidler families say they plan to turn around the Padres, who have struggled in recent years in the National League West.

Kevin O’Malley, co-founder of Top of the Third, and Brian O’Malley, minority owner of Top of the Third are the grandsons of the Dodgers’ legend owner, the late Walter O’Malley, who is enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Australian Football League launches major anti-homophobia drive

The Australian Football League (AFL) has “declared war” on homophobia in a new initiative.

League chief Andrew Demetriou, Olympic flag bearer Lauren Jackson and Collingwood president Eddie McGuire will lead the campaign to change attitudes towards LGBT people in sport and the workplace.

The campaign will begin in the wake of a homophobic slur recently made by Stephen Milne – who plays for St Kilda’s - against Harry O’Brien of Collingwood Magpies.
