A crisis can occur when things begin to fall apart around us. The things that shape us, such as our marital/relationship status, job title, relationships with family and friends, health, or financial security, which have disappeared and we find ourselves adrift without any clear guidelines that tell us what to do next.

We feel lost.

Are homophobic bullies actually gay?

After the brutal torture of one gay man and two gay teens in New York and the multiple bully-related suicides over the past few days, our community is understandably in shock and outraged. Many of us are finding it difficult to make sense of such heinous events, but we are supporting each other through rallies and the new “It Gets Better” viral campaign.

Through this process, there is one common question that people seem to have: What’s the deal with all these homophobic bullies?

Originally founded in 1978 as a small community nursing program, Native Health is a non-profit organization that currently provides medical, dental and behavioral health services.

Out on Facebook? The pros and cons when it comes to family

Social Media has become an important part of our society and it allows people to keep in contact with family and friends simply by the click of a button. The quick posts of random thoughts, exciting news, changes in life, or what you ate that day keeps the interaction and promotes relationship growth (even when there is distance involved).

Some people are “out” on Facebook with their family and have no problems; others face emotional pain from family responses (or lack of responses), while others try to keep their sexuality hidden away.

Gray, Gay … and Worried

David and his partner, Paschal, together for more than 20 years, married during the brief period that same-sex marriages were legal in California. They’re in their 60s, in decent health and financial shape. Yet thinking about their future makes David uneasy.

With an eldercare system (if you can call it a system) that depends on younger family members shouldering responsibility for older ones, perhaps any childless and aging couple would share his concerns. But gay men and lesbians face particular challenges, David pointed out to me in a recent e-mail.

San Diego County launches massive campaign to help people with mental illness

SAN DIEGO -- More than 750,000 San Diegans suffer from a mental illness. That’s enough people to fill Qualcomm Stadium 10 times.

Unfortunately, the stigma associated with mental illness keeps many people from seeking treatment and from beginning the road to recovery.

Cheated on your partner with the opposite sex?

Did your innocent friendship with the opposite sex turn sexual after a few drinks? Or did this one-night sex hook-up happen when you were feeling at your lowest and in need of comfort?

Many gay couples face this struggle with the "one time mistake" of infidelity hitting the relationship at full speed, but some also have the added challenge of the sex being with someone of the opposite sex. This double whammy not only makes the bond even more insecure and difficult to trust, but everything down to your sexuality is now in question.
