Relationship? Pride Do’s and Don'ts

Pride is here! The colorful flags are all hung out along University Avenue and the restaurants and stores are decorating for the large event. There is such hype for all the big parties, the celebrations and the party scene, that often maintaining and focusing on relationships can be overlooked by many couples.

Q Psych: Ways to overcome roadblocks to having a lasting relationship

One hallmark of success in life may be the ability to sustain a long-term relationship. People in lasting relationships tend to live longer and stay healthier.

Research shows that they report more happiness in life, more rewarding social interactions, and lower instances of substance abuse. Maybe the most important aspect of living within a successful permanent relationship is that a person not only feels loved, but also is able to share love with somebody else.

Stepping Stone needs help overcoming financial challenges

SAN DIEGO – Stepping Stone of San Diego is facing monumental financial challenges.

The drug and alcohol treatment facility and outpatient program specifically designed to serve LGBT clients needs your help.

The fundraising goals of the agency are, due to recent county budget cuts, much higher than anticipated earlier this year.

Whether to change

Do you have an aspect of yourself that you would like to change?

If you are interested only in superficial things like wanting more money or getting a better-looking body, this article is not for you. However, if you are interested in changing your personality, getting off drugs, starting a relationship, or any number of other meaningful challenges, please read on.

Q Psych: Handling personality conflicts

Some people are easy to be around and some are not. All of us seem to have at least a few difficult friends in our lives. They can range from those who are a mild annoyance to those who can make life seem nearly intolerable at times.

Working through grief and loss

Editor's note: This support column was initially run on Feb. 18, after several high profile losses occurred in our community. After the recent deaths of Daniel Bodenmiller and Ray Portillos Leon in the past week, SDGLN and the author felt it was fitting to run again, as a means to help the community at large cope with the loss of these two larger-than-life individuals, who meant so much to so many.

Relationships are an integral part of human existence. Whether a relationship involves a friend or family member, people around us make an impact on our lives in some way or another.

The struggles of having an unemployed partner

You are working … your partner is at home eating “bon-bons” (well, at least that is what runs through your mind) … and resentment builds ...

It is another morning that you wake up to the alarm clock screaming and you press the snooze button a few times before you have to face the daily grind of work. As you struggle to crawl out of bed, your partner is cuddled up in that same warm and cozy bed. You go to work and face the ups-and-downs of your job … while your partner stays at home, unemployed, doing who-knows-what.

Q Psych: Addictions come in many forms

We are all pleasure seekers. There are pleasure centers located in the human brain, which, when activated, are associated with feelings of euphoria. This happens to us every day.

During the day we go through naturally occurring periods when we feel comfortable, secure, happy, and fulfilled and this is followed by periods when more negative feelings are aroused (anxiety, insecurity, discomfort). We humans are highly reinforced by positive feelings of pleasure. We want to experience euphoria again and again.

Fortunately, that’s not all there is to life.

Q Psyhc: Understanding anger

We all get angry. Many people choose not to believe this, but anger is a universal human emotion that can help us survive and solve some of life’s problems, or, conversely, it can create further trouble. Anger is an emotion that can occur when there is a threat to our self esteem, our bodies, our property, our ways of seeing the world or our desires.

Families come in all shapes and sizes, and co-parenting comes with legal issues

For many years gays and lesbians have been joining together in a way that is much more personal than their goal of equality. This joint venture is the creation of a child, or even more importantly, a family.

Whether it is a gay man (or couple) and a lesbian woman (or couple) using the man’s sperm to inseminate the woman or two lesbians joining together to create a child by using artificial insemination, the fact that a child is being created cannot be overlooked.
