On Sunday, October 17, friends of Stepping Stone of San Diego, Inc., sailed on board the Bahia Hotel's William D. Evans sternwheeler for the second annual Mission Bay Cruise. The dinner cruise served as a fundraiser for the organization while offering an engaging program, including recognitions, speakers, a successful drawing with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a silent auction, a unique pledge drive, and a dance with DJ Kiki.
The Board, management, and clients of Stepping Stone would like to thank all sponsors and guests who made this event a lasting success. The Imperial Court de San Diego was honored for its decades of service to the organization, and City Commissioner Nicole Murray Ramirez received the Lifetime Achievement plaque by Stepping Stone Chairman Tom Reise.
Public supporters of Stepping Stone - Councilmembers Carl DeMaio and Todd Gloria, Kevin Beiser, candidate for the Unified School Board, and Stephen Whitburn, candidate for County Supervisor - reminded the audience why alcohol and drug recovery is a pivotal concern to the health of the LGBT community.
Vice Chairman Dario Jones and long term Board Member Wayne Back delivered touching stories of how addiction has affected their lives, indirectly and directly. Earl Carter, Manager of Operations of Stepping Stone's residential treatment center, shared his story of experience, strength, and hope.
San Diego’s nationally recognized drug and alcohol treatment agency primarily catering to the LGBT community has been facing major financial cutbacks over the past year. Stepping Stone is a publicly funded non-profit organization that has been delivering superior residential and outpatient treatment to addicts and individuals living with HIV/AIDS since 1976. In response to significant reductions to the agency’s county funding base, the organization launched a major outreach campaign to keep in place its life-saving services.
The agency, today under the direction of distinguished recovery pioneer John de Miranda, M.Ed., is standing strong in an economic environment that has stripped service providers in the field of outreach, prevention, and other publicly funded programs. With the support of the community that has benefited from the outstanding treatment programs of the organization, Stepping Stone will be able to continue its service to the public.
Many thanks go the 2010 Capstone Donors of Stepping Stone of San Diego, Inc. - San Diego LGBT Pride, Chris Shaw, Mahogany Run Delivery, and MSE Landscaping Architects - and to the guests, donors and sponsors who contributed to the second annual Mission Bay Cruise.
