SACRAMENTO, CA - The California State Legislature approved AB 887 on September 2, a bill authored by Assemblymember Toni Atkins to strengthen state anti-discrimination laws regarding gender identity and gender expression.
“As Californians, we are committed to equal treatment for all,” says Atkins. “This bill makes it clear that transgender Californians are legally protected against discrimination in employment, housing, and other arenas and strengthens our commitment to fairness and equality. I am grateful for the support of my colleagues in the Legislature.”
AB 887 strengthens the language of a variety of state laws that prohibit discrimination based on gender and makes it clear that gender expression and gender identity are included in those protections. Transgender people often experience job or housing discrimination, at times because of uncertainty about the law. This bill will clarify the responsibilities of employers and landlords and ensure that transgender people are aware of their rights.
The bill now goes to Governor Brown, who has until October 9 to sign it into law.
