Catholic Leaders Testify before Maryland State Legislature to End Discrimination

ANNAPOLIS, MD - State and national Catholics for Equality leaders testified on March 7 before the Maryland House Health Government Operations Committee, urging state legislators to pass House Bill 235, the Gender Identity Anti-Discrimination Act. This bill would prohibit discrimination on the basis of gender identity in the areas of employment, housing, and credit purposes. Catholic social teaching emphasizes the right to housing and employment for all people.

Frank G. Scarpaci Appointed to Interim Executive Director of San Diego LGBT Pride

San Diego LGBT Pride has hired business and management consultant Frank G. Scarpaci of The Vianova Group, LLC, to serve as interim executive director until a final candidate is selected for the position. According to San Diego Pride Co-chair Larry Ramey, the board has just completed its first round of interviews for the post.

California Supreme Court Takes up Prop 8 Legal Question

On Wednesday, February 16, 2011, The California Supreme Court decided to take up a legal question regarding Prop 8. The legal question is this: Does ProtectMarriage.com, under California law, have the right to defend Prop 8 in federal court?

The question originated in the Perry v. Schwarzenegger case. Former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and former Attorney General Jerry Brown -- who have the legal duty to defend state laws -- chose not to defend Prop 8 in court.

Hillcrest Gears up for 10th Annual Mardi Gras

Once again, Hillcrest becomes the annual Mardi Gras destination in San Diego, this year on March 8 - Fat Tuesday it is! It's the 10th Anniversary of this fun filled outdoor block party featuring street performers, musical acts, rides, vendors, and more.

Stepping Stone to Celebrate 35th Anniversary

On June 4, 2011, friends and alumni of Stepping Stone of San Diego, Inc., will bring together hundreds of people for an outdoor extravaganza from 2 – 6 pm to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the organization.

“Live It Up,” hosted at Board Chairperson Tom Reise’s estate in Normal Heights, will include a car show, entertainment, and food from local restaurateurs.

The event program objectives include promoting alcohol and drug recovery, celebrating “life,” and raising funds for Stepping Stone’s treatment and support services.

Baldwin Calls Out Republicans on Their Hypocrisy

Saying she wanted to force her Republican colleagues to “focus on jobs and not on restricting women’s rights,” Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) today attempted to amend an extreme measure she opposes that would limit a woman’s rights and endanger her health.

In a House Health Subcommittee mark-up February 11, 2011, Baldwin offered an amendment to the Republican-sponsored H.R. 358, the “Protect Life Act,” so that the bill could not take effect if it increased taxes on individuals or small businesses.

Gay Anti-discrimination Hospital Visitation Regulation in Effect

On January 18, 2011, a new federal regulation that prohibits discrimination for gay and lesbian families visiting their family or friends in the hospital has finally taken affect.

President Obama announced the new regulation last year in response to a Florida incident where a lesbian couple was kept apart while one partner passed away in a Miami hospital. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, hospital gay patients can now designate their own visitors. The Human Rights campaign has also prepared an official Hospital Visitation Guide for LGBT Families.

Gay parenting is more common down South according to Census

Jacksonville, FL - Recent data from the Census Bureau found that Jacksonville hosts one of the biggest gay parent populations in the country and child rearing by gay parents is more common there than anywhere else in the country.

The survey found that gay couples in the South are more likely to raise children than gay couples on the West Coast, New York and New England. The concentration of gay couples raising children is 32 percent in Jacksonville and 34 percent in San Antonio.

Women's Museum to Move to Liberty Station

The Women's History Museum and Educational Center has changed its name to The Women's Museum of California. The new name comes with an anticipated move to Liberty Station's Promenade at NTC in Point Loma this time next year.
