President Signs "Defining Civil Rights Measure" Allowing for the Repeal of DADT

Panic Reigns among Kenya’s Gays after Prime Minister Threatens Arrests

NAIROBI, Kenya - An official from Kenya’s largest gay rights group states that there is panic among gays, following several remarks made by Kenya’s prime minister affirming that homosexuals should be arrested.

The Gay and Lesbian Coalition of Kenya’s board member, Nguru Karugu said that the office has received a plethora calls from very concerned members. Some of these members are HIV-positive and are frightened that they will be arrested when they collect their prescription medicine from the local government clinics.

U.N. Drops Protection for Gays and Lesbians in an Anti-execution Measure

A General Assembly panel of the United Nations dropped a specific reference protecting gays in a resolution that condemns executions. Every two years, this panel has been passing a resolution that condemns extrajudicial, summary and arbitrary executions.

In 2008, this particular resolution included a reference to killings due to sexual orientation. In fact, the resolution has included this reference for the past 10 years.

Lady Gaga: Repeal DADT

On November 29, Lady Gaga released an online video message directed to her supporters and followers to push for repeal in the senate lame-duck session.

A Party with Eleanor Roosevelt Dec. 11

Members of the public are invited to a Holiday Open House Party with Eleanor Roosevelt at the Women’s History Museum in honor of Human Rights Day on Saturday, December 11 from 1 to 4pm at the museum in Golden Hill.

The afternoon will start at 1 pm with a one-act play centered on the life and work of Eleanor Roosevelt. Following the reading, guests will enjoy refreshments and an opportunity to explore the museum and to indulge in some holiday shopping in a party atmosphere.

San Diego Pride Invites Community to Town Hall Meeting

Board and staff members of San Diego LGBT Pride are seeking community input regarding entertainment and other highlights for next year's Pride festival, to be discussed at a town hall meeting at 7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 6.

"The planning process for Pride weekend begins early each year, so everyone is encouraged to attend and share ideas," said Pride Board Co-Chair Judi Schaim. Other points on the meeting agenda will include updates on Pride's ongoing search for an executive director as well as the organization's recent audit, which has been completed.

Help 42 LGBT Families this Holiday Season

This tough economy has affected all communities and people. Every year the Imperial Court helps Family Matters provide Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners to LGBT families plus toys for their children. “This year we have over 42 families…that’s 210 people including parents and children,” stated City Commissioner Nicole Murray Ramirez,” founder of the annual LGBT Family Holiday Campaign. “Many have lost their jobs and even their homes,” stated Allan Spyere, 2010 Chair of the LGBT Holiday Campaign.

Hawaii Could Legalize Same-Sex Unions

HONOLULU, HI - There is a good chance that same-sex civil unions could become state law in Hawaii in 2011. Following the election victory of the pro-gay rights Democratic Governor-elect Neil Abercrombie and, the chance of civil-unions being legalized in Hawaii seem to look a lot better. Also, the rejection of several church-backed candidates has created a more favorable climate for the legalization of same-sex unions.

Ninth Circuit Ct. Upholds DADT Injunction Stay

WASHINGTON – On Monday, Nov. 1, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals issued a stay pending appeal of the judgment in the Log Cabin Republicans v. United States case, which found “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” unconstitutional. Last month, U.S. District Judge Virginia A. Phillips demanded that the military enforce her order against the Pentagon’s DADT policy that bars gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military. The judge ordered that all investigations and discharges be suspended and discontinued under the law.
