With dangerous rhetoric like ”God is an avenger of blood” and “vengeance is mine,” Lou Engle is scheduled to gather thousands of like-minded believers in Sacramento, California, over Labor Day weekend to preach his virulently anti-gay message.
Engle’s political connection to Sam Brownback, Senator from Kansas, prompted the Kansas Democratic Party in May 2010 to urge Brownback to denounce his affiliation with Engle because Engle supported Uganda’s proposed law to execute gays. Now Engle has been endorsed by Newt Gingrich and Mike Huckabee along with a list of top anti-LGBT religious leaders.
What was first billed as a 10-year anniversary for TheCall’s first youth rally on the National Mall, is now being called the kick off for the November elections. This unhealthy alliance of religion and politics is being challenged by California Faith for Equality and the Courage Campaign.
“It is not only misguided but reckless to promote a God of vengeance,” said Samuel M. Chu, executive director of California Faith for Equality. ”Religion should never be used as a weapon to condemn, to harm, or to strip away a person’s humanity.” California Faith for Equality (CFE) is an organization of over 6,000 clergy and lay leaders who support equality and justice for all.
“We represent good people of deep faith across the great state of California who know that traditional religious values are love, justice and compassion, not bigotry, discrimination and hatred,” said the Very Rev. Dr. Brian Baker, Dean of Trinity Cathedral in Sacramento. “CFE stands with all those working for marriage equality because we believe God blesses all people equally and that Constitution should protect all people equally.”
GLAAD helped Kansas faith leaders expose Lou Engle’s support of Uganda’s “kill the gays” bill. And when Bishop Christopher Senyonjo from Uganda spoke out against US evangelists like Lou Engle, GLAAD provided media assistance. GLAAD will continue to shine the light on anti-LGBT religious leaders who undermine our equality.
