VIDEO: Hillcrest is strapping on its heels and getting ready to race

SAN DIEGO -- While it would not necessarily be considered abnormal for a community like Hillcrest, if you happened to see teams of people jogging or working out wearing high heels over the last couple of weeks, they were most likely training for the first-ever Amazing High Heel Race, to be held tomorrow, June 18.

Fitness trainer Chris Tina Bruce of Discover Health & Fitness, along with her friend Jess Colyer, even created a YouTube video showing the pair getting an "intense" outdoor workout in at Balboa Park, in heels, as they prepare for tomorrow's scavenger hunt.

Michael Calles, who is leading the Amazing High Heel Race planning committee, said that all of the preparations has been made and he hopes the community is as excited as he is about the race.

The event, which is being billed as "a race toward a more colorful Hillcrest," will benefit the Hillcrest Business Association's (HBIA) plans to erect a 65-foot flag pole on Normal Street at University Avenue, which will fly a rainbow flag, known as the symbol of the LGBT community, year round.

"We sat for days trying to come up with what we could raise money for," Calles said. "Then finally ... bam! The Hillcrest Business Association's [flag project]! Many tourists have come through and expressed that they had no idea they were in San Diego's gay district."

The flag pole will serve as permanent symbol of the LGBT presence that has made Hillcrest what it is today. Future Amazing High Heel Race events will support other efforts of HBIA's Hillcrest Beautification Project, including painting light posts throughout the community.

Jim Winsor, SDGLN's Nightlife Columnist and SDPIX photographer, reports that as of yesterday, several teams have already registered, with nearly 30 teams expected to participate. Some of the participating team names include: Uptown Hotties; 4 Mo's and a Girl; Mija Cochinas; Dangerous Dave and his Colostomies; It's Disney Bitch; Dubble Bumps; The Dragiest Catch; ThatsSoGayLive; Hillcrest Hotties; Rockstar Racers; SD Call Girls; and The Poom Poom Pals.

The race begins at 3 pm and teams will have a limited amount of time to complete a list of scavenger clues that will be provided at the start of the race. Teams will gather at the "starting line" at Baja Betty's, have a pit stop at Urban Mo's, and will race to the finish line at Gossip Grill, where a closing party will be held.

Registration is $125 per team, with at least six people needed for each team. Participants must wear high heels at least 3 inches high, and have a team theme or uniform and team name.

Volunteers will be stationed at each scavenger hunt location to check clues, and community members who are not participating are encouraged to stand along the route and cheer their heel stomping friends on.

Organizers remind participants that they must supply their own digital camera to use during the race and should have an extra set of heels or heel repair kit on hand. They have also made it clear that "pulling hair, weaves, or wig snatching is prohibited."

Awards will be given out to teams in the following categories: Best Time; Highest Heel; Fiercest Heel; Most Creative Team Attire; Best Team Spirit; and Biggest Blister.

It is not too late to sign-up. Organizers encourage last minute teams to reigster online today to take part in what is sure to be one of Hillcrests craziest but fun events yet.
