Issues linger in San Diego man's death in Cathedral City

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. — Nearly three months after he died in Cathedral City police custody, Scott Routh's family has continued consulting with an attorney as they await answers about how he died.

Routh, 47, died shortly after midnight Aug. 21 at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. Just hours before, police had escorted Routh out of the clothing-optional Cathedral City Boy's Club.

Routh had been subdued and handcuffed when he attempted to resist, police said.

Officers noticed he had labor breathing and Routh died at a hospital shortly after. The Riverside County District's Attorney took over the case, which is standard when someone dies in custody.
