SAN DIEGO -- Local activist Sean Sala spoke Wednesday to San Diego's Channel 10 News about his experience with anti-gay "conversion therapy."

The 26-year-old who grew up in Dallas, Texas, said that he was sent to a program at the age of 15 after telling his church leaders that he was struggling with his sexuality.

Sala says he joined a bi-weekly program presented by Exodus International which set out to "fix" him, and make him lose his same-sex attraction.

A bill that would put limits on "conversion therapy" programs in the state is currently being reviewed by the California legislature.

Senate Bill 1172, authored by state Sen. Ted Lieu (D-Torrance), would prohibit a psychotherapist from engaging in sexual orientation change efforts without first disclosing the risk of harm and obtaining the patient’s informed consent.
