SAN DIEGO – After San Diego Gay & Lesbian News broke the news that Hillcrest hot spot Eden will close this Friday, there was much talk around town and on Social Media about the nightclub and restaurant’s fate.
After rumors about the venue’s future had been swirling through the community for months, Eden’s owner David Laurent announced Wednesday that the chic club will indeed close after a final party Friday night, citing months of financial difficulties as the reason.
Laurent, who said he is “sad to see Eden go” because of its “amazing people, amazing staff and great community,” has invited everyone to a special closing party this Friday, which will include no cover charge, $5 “you-call-its,” and music by DJ Taj.
“Thank you to everyone who came and supported us – now we give back! One last party! Come make memories with us,” Laurent said about the farewell party.
Many customers and staff members took to Facebook to share memories and encourage their friends to attend Friday night’s closing party, including employee Victor Samaniego, who created an event on Facebook.
Lauren Bain, confirming the closure to her friends, posted: “Yes, Eden is closing, Friday will be it’s last night to RAGE, come with me and dance the night away! I will love all the awesome people I have met on the way and I will hold them close to my heart forever!”
Others, including San Diego City Councilmember Todd Gloria, made posts celebrating Eden’s contributions to the community:
“Eden revitalized an important corner in Hillcrest, created jobs and economic activity and gave back to the neighborhood through support of many community projects,” Gloria said. “This is sad news, but the fact that its location is already being eyed by a new tenant shows that District Three remains the place people want to be.”
Many commenters speculated on who the potential new tenant might be; however, no information has been confirmed yet. SDGLN will report on this when additional details become available.
Other comments from Facebook, include:
Sam J. Cortez: “I've had a lot of crazy memories at Eden SanDiego a lot of which I ironically won’t remember. Can't believe its closing.”
Lisa Weir: “Well, it's a good thing I spent Sunday night dancing my ass off there. Consider the fact that my feet still hurt, an HOMO-AGE to Eden SanDiego.”
Nicholas Haxo: “So sad that Eden SanDiego is closing! This was my favorite spot in Hillcrest. Hope all my friends working there find jobs or have new ones already lined up. I'm gonna miss this place mucho!”
Jennifer Johnson: “My heart is broken! I guess I know where I will be Friday.”
Sean Sala: “To Eden San Diego, thank you from Servicemembers United San Diego for your support of LGBT military, you will be missed!”

Eden is located at 1202 University Ave. in Hillcrest. Doors open at 10 pm.
