SAN DIEGO -- The Lambda Archives showed off their hard work and dedication in their new location, with an open house held Sunday, Aug. 5. On hand were several board members, representatives from community groups and individuals who experienced the newly renovated location and first official exhibit for the Archives.
“It was really quite wonderful. It exceeded our expectations,” said Maureen Steiner, Lambda Archives board president, a sentiment some attendees felt as well.
“I was impressed, both with the event and with the new home for the Archives,” said Stephen Whitburn, who attended the open house, said. “It was good to see such a big turnout from the community to celebrate the opening.”
Whitburn added the new exhibit – which includes a carefully selected sample of documents held at the Archives – captures the local LGBT history, saying, “The way they have laid things out is really attractive and inviting. It’s not a stuffy storage room at all; it’s much more like a gallery.”
Steiner said the selection for the first exhibit was very intentional.
