SAN DIEGO – The highly visible space at the northeast corner of University Avenue and Vermont Street most recently housing Eden Nightclub and Restaurant will not be dark for much longer. In fact, the new owners officially took control of the space today, and will reopen the venue’s patio and nightclub space this Friday and Saturday night for a special “To Be Renamed” party.
DVR Intellectual Properties Corp. – which also owns The Range Kitchen & Cocktails in Hillcrest -- will be taking over the lease on the space and have big plans to turn the spot into a true entertainment complex that the community will embrace. Some owners of DVR are also affiliated with Downtown San Diego hot spots Whiskey Girl and Double Deuce.
At this weekend’s party, the space will not look much different from when it was Eden, but plans are being set in motion to give the place a completely new look, feel and flow – and the owner wants the community’s input.
“We want to make this right and order to do so, we are very interested in what the community wants here,” Rob Lane told San Diego Gay and Lesbian News in an exclusive interview.
Lane and Jay Taylor, who are not only business partners but also married to each other, believe that the fact that they are a part of the LGBT community will help them be more in tune with the needs and wants of the LGBT community than the straight owners of the property’s previous businesses, Eden and Universal.
“We are involved in the community, and this will now officially be a gay owned and operated business,” Taylor said. “We learned from the mistakes of the previous businesses here and will make sure the space has a strong connection and commitment to the community.”
Changes to the space will be coming very soon.
In fact, The Range Kitchen & Cocktails, which is located across University from the venue, will be moving into Eden’s former restaurant space within two weeks, with plans to reopen on Labor Day. The Range will remain open at its location at 1263 University Ave. for the time being, but will soon close to facilitate the move.
After this weekend’s reopening party, the nightclub will continue to be open every Friday and Saturday night until the final plans for the property’s remodel are approved by the appropriate community planning groups and the city.
Once all those plans are approved, the venue will briefly shut down – for just 11 days – for a complete remodel with plans to reopen around Thanksgiving.
Customers will see a mix of new and familiar faces at the venue, including Daniel Schulz, who will serve as general manager, the position he held at Eden.
SDGLN will continue to report on developments to the property, and will work with the owners of the new space to share plans and solicit feedback from the community on what is hoped to be coming Hillcrest’s newest hot spot.
