Advocacy groups to host mayoral debate on transportation issues, quality of life

SAN DIEGO – The next mayoral debate will provide community members the opportunity to engage mayoral candidates Carl DeMaio and Bob Filner on sustainable economic development and growth, improved transportation and quality of life for all San Diegans.

The debate -- titled “Walk. Bike. Move. Live. A San Diego Mayoral Debate” -- will be from 6:30 to 9 pm Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the University of San Diego’s Shiley Theatre, 5998 Alcala Park, San Diego, CA 92110.

Topics include:

• Improving and increasing transportation choices beyond cars

• Livable, walkable and bikeable communities

• Sustainable, smart urban growth and development

• Providing employment opportunities close to home and vice-versa
This will be the only mayoral debate that will have a primary focus on enhancing and improving quality of life through how we live in and move around America’s Finest City.

The sponsors are Walk San Diego, the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition, Move San Diego, Urban Land Institute San Diego/Tijuana District Council and The University of San Diego.

The details

• 6 to 6:30 pm -- VIP reception with candidates for sponsors and hosts.

• 7 to 8 pm -- Live debate.

• 8 to 9 pm -- Post-debate reception with refreshments.

Guests are invited to use public transit (Bus Route 44 stops right in front of USD), bicycle (free bike valet will be provided) or telecommute HERE.

Move San Diego advocates for convenient, on-time, healthy, sustainable transportation throughout the San Diego region. San Diego County Bicycle Coalition is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization which advocates for and protects the rights of all people who ride bicycles. They promote bicycling as a mainstream, safe and enjoyable form of transportation and recreation.

The Urban Land Institute San Diego/Tijuana District Council provides leadership in the responsible use of land, and in creating and sustaining thriving communities worldwide. As the “go to” land use organization for real estate issues in our region, the Council facilitates the open exchange of ideas among industry leaders, practitioners and policy makers. The District Council also sponsors monthly educational forums.

Walk San Diego is dedicated to enhancing the livability of communities through promotion, education, and advocacy, by making walking a safe and viable choice for all people.
