Last week, the Los Angeles Times ran an op-ed by Michael McGough that focused heavily on Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s recent, and not-so-recent, comments about LGBT people. In a recent exchange with Princeton University student, Duncan Hosie, Scalia refuses to see being lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender as identity characteristics, but only as behavior. Thus the title of the op-ed, “For Scalia, no gay people, just gay sex?”

SAN DIEGO -- For most people, an invitation to sing the national anthem at a San Diego Padres baseball game would be the thrill of a lifetime. Not so for Bobby Thompson.

In 2007, with retirement from the Navy just a few years away, singing publicly with the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus meant that he could be fired under the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. And not only that, he could lose his retirement benefits after nearly 20 years of service.

So, with a heavy heart, Thompson sat in the stands and remained silent while his friends proudly sang the “Star Spangled Banner.”

SAN DIEGO – A local artist and photographer with a heart of gold has won a $5,000 grant in an online contest for people in the second half of their careers who are inspiring others to do good.

Sue Doyle, 58, of Alpine, Calif., is one of five winners in the “Marigold Ideas For Good” contest for September, the results of which were only recently announced. The contest is inspired by the movie, “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” when a group of British retirees move to India and discover that life and love can be renewed when you let go of the past.
