More than 40 chefs participating in Taste of Hillcrest on Saturday

SAN DIEGO -- The popular Taste of Hillcrest event is back; and it promises to engage all of your taste buds.

The 10th annual event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 17, in the Hillcrest dining district and will offer participants so much to choose from.

“This annual Taste is a favored event among the foodies and community drawing together over 1,200 people for a tantalizing afternoon of sampling,” said Benjamin Nicholls, executive director of the Hillcrest Business Association.

VIDEO: Coffee Party Movement makes its way to San Diego

Coffee or tea? A new movement is giving Americans the option.

In response to the growing Tea Party movement, one woman created the Coffee Party, which has thousands of members across the nation, including 120 in San Diego.

“We’ve only been around for two months and we’re already having an impact,” said Coffee Party founder Annabel Park. “We’re giving ordinary people a voice and that hasn’t happened before.”

She was recently diagnosed with ovarian cancer and due to circumstances beyond her control, has no resources to aid in her fight or to pay for her daily subsistence. The author is a personal friend who is sharing Christynn's story with the hopes of not only helping her, but to also spread greater awareness about this difficult disease.

San Diego to save $25M over next 20 years after refinancing sewer bonds

SAN DIEGO – The city will save $25 million over the next two decades as a result of refinancing $161.9 million in existing sewer bonds, Mayor Jerry Sanders said Friday afternoon.

“Wall Street has clearly cast a vote of confidence for the financial health of our city’s Public Utilities Department,” Sanders said. “All San Diego ratepayers will benefit from this good news.”

SDSU Diversity Conference is set for April 24

SAN DIEGO – San Diego State University will hold its third annual Diversity Conference on Saturday, April 24, at the SDSU Aztec Center.

Hours will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Diversity Conference will focus on a range of topic, including but not limited to education, health, gender, race and religion. Issues concerning glass ceilings, social justice, economics, law, sexual orientation and veterans are also included in the workshops.

Similar to last year’s presenters, the 2010 presenters’ backgrounds vary from SDSU faculty or staff to experts from outside of the campus.

Baja, Mexico region rattled by another earthquake

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a magnitude-5.3 earthquake struck Baja, Mexico, on Thursday morning, only four days following the magnitude-7.2 quake that hit Easter Sunday.

The epicenter of Thursday’s seismic event was a mere 32 miles from Mexicali, a city hit hard by the large quake and its ensuing aftershocks.

Thursday’s temblor struck at approximately 9:44 a.m. It is one of several aftershocks that have hit the region in the last few days.

Be a prom star at all-inclusive dance in Hillcrest

SAN DIEGO -- The Hillcrest Youth Center wants you to be a star for the "Gaylaxy," an all-inclusive LGBTQ friendly prom that allows everyone of all orientations to enjoy an affirming and unique prom experience.

In recent weeks, the compelling stories of Constance McMillen and Derrick Martin have brought national attention to the discrimination LGBT youths face in public high school.

The Hillcrest Youth Center, with support from The Center, will hold its annual event on June 19, and all LGBTQ youths ages 14 to 20 are invited to attend.

Replica of Vietnam Veterans Memorial to be set up in Balboa Park

SAN DIEGO – A traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., will be set up outdoors Friday through Sunday in Balboa Park.

“The Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall: A Time to Remember, to Reflect, to Heal” will be open to the public 24 hours a day on the south lawn outside the Veterans Museum and Memorial Center in Balboa Park.

The replica wall stands 8 feet tall and is 240 feet long. The names of more than 58,000 service men and women who died in Vietnam are inscribed on the wall.
