Be a prom star at all-inclusive dance in Hillcrest

SAN DIEGO -- The Hillcrest Youth Center wants you to be a star for the "Gaylaxy," an all-inclusive LGBTQ friendly prom that allows everyone of all orientations to enjoy an affirming and unique prom experience.

In recent weeks, the compelling stories of Constance McMillen and Derrick Martin have brought national attention to the discrimination LGBT youths face in public high school.

The Hillcrest Youth Center, with support from The Center, will hold its annual event on June 19, and all LGBTQ youths ages 14 to 20 are invited to attend.

Replica of Vietnam Veterans Memorial to be set up in Balboa Park

SAN DIEGO – A traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., will be set up outdoors Friday through Sunday in Balboa Park.

“The Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall: A Time to Remember, to Reflect, to Heal” will be open to the public 24 hours a day on the south lawn outside the Veterans Museum and Memorial Center in Balboa Park.

The replica wall stands 8 feet tall and is 240 feet long. The names of more than 58,000 service men and women who died in Vietnam are inscribed on the wall.

SAN DIEGO -- For those that felt Sunday’s 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck in Baja and shook San Diego and all of Southern California, a reaction that was shared by many was “Is this the Big One?”

Fortunately, initial reports indicate that there are very little instances of damage and casualties. And while earthquakes are nothing new for San Diegans, the sheer force and magnitude of Sunday’s most recent seismic activity has residents wondering what they can do to be prepared.

Celebration of Life for Tyler Augustine is tonight at Rich's

SAN DIEGO – Rich’s will host a Celebration of Life for Tyler Augustine from 9 to 11 p.m. Sunday, April 4, at the Hillcrest dance club.

Augustine, who was a popular barback at Rich’s, died Tuesday at Scripps Mercy Hospital. He was 24. The cause of death was a brain hemorrhage that led to cardiac arrest. Prior to his death, he had been in a coma and on life support after being found unconscious at his home in University Heights.

Craig Noel, founding director of Old Globe, dies at 94

SAN DIEGO -- Craig Noel, founding director of The Old Globe, died of natural causes at his home in San Diego on Saturday, April 3. He was 94.

Noel was a significant figure in the development of American theater, having led the Globe from its earliest days as a community organization to an internationally renowned institution. Over his more than 70-year career at the Globe, Noel directed more than 200 works, produced an additional 270 productions and created innovative and influential theater programs.

Car hit, killed EMT at crash scene

SAN DIEGO -- An emergency medical technician (EMT), responding to an accident on a rain-soaked State Route 163, was hit and killed by a car while setting out flares Thursday morning.

The chain-reaction crash involving four, possibly five, vehicles happened after the ambulance stopped to help a stranded driver on northbound 163 just south of Robinson Avenue around 7 a.m. After the ambulance stopped, a pickup truck and a Toyota Scion collided.
