21-year-old man stabbed in Hillcrest domestic dispute, police say

SAN DIEGO -- A 21-year-old man was stabbed during a domestic dispute last night in Hillcrest, police said.

About 8 p.m. Sunday, San Diego police arrived at the scene near University Avenue and Park Boulevard and found the victim bleeding from the stab wound in his left armpit that had punctured a major artery.

A 27-year-old man was tending to the victim’s wound, police said, and he was at first mistaken for a Good Samaritan.

Witnesses told police that the domestic dispute occurred when the victim allegedly ended his relationship with the suspect.

Imperial Court to conduct Easter egg hunt for LGBT community

SAN DIEGO -- The Imperial Court de San Diego will host its 8th annual LGBT community Easter egg hunt this Sunday.

The Easter egg hunt will be held at 2 p.m. April 4 at Trolley Barn Park, Adams Avenue and Park Boulevard.

There will be baskets and prizes for children up to age 12.

Q4 report: More than 300 tech start-ups create 1,070 jobs in region

More than 300 new technology start-ups created 1,070 jobs in San Diego in 2009, and the region won record-high federal funding to offset a slide in venture capital investment, a new report states.

“Even when the economy is down, new companies are formed in the innovation sectors,” said Steve Hoey, senior program manager for CONNECT, San Diego’s technology and life sciences accelerator. CONNECT published its Fourth Quarter 2009 Innovation Report last week, and reported the steady growth in tech companies in the region.

VIDEO: Chelsea’s Law could create one-strike provision for sex offenders

A law that could create a one-strike provision and reform parole and monitoring for registered sex offenders will be introduced into legislation in April, a state lawmaker said Tuesday.

The investigation into the death of 17-year-old Chelsea King prompted the proposed law, Chelsea’s Law.

Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher and Chelsea’s parents, Brent and Kelly King, gathered Tuesday to announce the legislative effort and a timeline for the Assembly Public Safety Committee to consider it.

Gays protest Romney book signing in La Jolla

SAN DIEGO -- A dozen gay people protested an appearance by Mitt Romney at a Mormon bookstore in La Jolla on Monday, March 22.

They said Romney should apologize for Mormons' having donated "$30 million" to the campaign that led to the passage of Proposition 8, which re-banned same-sex marriage in California in 2008.

La Jolla protest against Mitt Romney is set for tonight

SAN DIEGO – Californians Against Hate has called for a demonstration at 6 p.m. today at Mitt Romney’s book signing in La Jolla.

Organizers for the group will “ask Romney to help stop the Mormon Church’s nasty campaign against gay marriage,” at today’s protest at the Deseret Bookstore, 8657 Villa La Jolla Drive.

“As a national political leader and influential member of the Mormon Church, Mitt Romney could persuade Church leaders to end their 15 years of active involvement, and massive financial support to oppose equal rights for Gay and Lesbian Americans,” the statement said.

VIDEO: ‘Floatopia’ gets wild on Mission Bay

An estimated 5,000 revelers joined the “Floatopia” floating party Saturday where authorities arrested a dozen people for public drunkenness, rescued two from the water and gave medical aid to another half-dozen.

The crowds of rafters off Fanuel Street Park in Pacific Beach had been swelling since about 9 a.m. as partyers on Spring Break take advantage of a city loophole in a ban on drinking on the beach. The ban does not extend into the bay or ocean.

Man stabbed at Hillcrest taco shop dies

SAN DIEGO – Police are seeking the public’s help in finding two men in connection with a stabbing at a taco shop in Hillcrest popular with the LGBT community.

The victim died Thursday night at Scripps Mercy Hospital, authorities said.

Fernando Fernandez Jr., 30, of Chula Vista was stabbed numerous times at Los Panchos Taco Shop in the 400 block of Washington Street in Hillcrest.

Authorities said Fernandez got into an argument with two men about 12:15 a.m. Tuesday. One of the men stabbed Fernandez repeatedly, then he and the other man fled.
