Skeletal remains of Amber Dubois are found in Pala

Escondido police announced Sunday the discovery of the remains of Amber Dubois in Pala.

The Escondido teen went missing on Feb. 13, 2009, and has been missing since. She was 14 years old at the time.

“The discovery was made in the early morning hours of Saturday in a very rugged and remote section of Pala,” Escondido police Chief Jim Maher said at a news conference.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the body using dental records and Dubois’ parents were notified.

Tot lot groundbreaking this morning

SAN DIEGO -- The groundbreaking ceremony for the new "tot lot" at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Park is being held this morning at 11 a.m.

District 4 City Councilmember Anthony Young, along with Mayor Jerry Sanders and residents of the fourth district, will host the event at the park, 6401 Skyline Drive.

The park, built in 1986, will serve more than 3,000 children each year.

Youth activities held at the community park include swimming, racquetball, basketball, an annual Spring Egg Hunt and the Valencia Park Youth Football Association.

Groups to protest "ex-gay ministry" Saturday in La Mesa

LA MESA – Local gay rights advocates have scheduled two protests Saturday near Skyline Wesleyan Church, where an anti-gay conference will be taking place.

The first protest will be from 7 to 8 a.m. at 113300 Campo Road, as participants in the “Love Won Out” conference are arriving at Skyline Wesleyan Church.

The second protest will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the same location.

Pastor Jim Garlow and Skyline Wesleyan Church are hosting the conference during which the “ex-gay ministry” will produce a handful of speakers who will claim to have been “cured” of their homosexuality.

Undercover operation leads to 51 arrests

SAN DIEGO – Fifty-one people have been indicted after a six-month undercover operation into stolen vehicles and drugs, officials said today.

The Regional Auto Theft Task Force (RATT) and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) conducted the investigation that resulted in charges of auto theft, selling stolen vehicles, sale of controlled substances, carjacking, residential burglary and identity theft.

As part of Operation Hotel California, undercover officers purchased stolen cars, drugs and weapons at an undercover location in San Diego.

DeMaio, Frye to discuss city issues at Catfish Club luncheon Friday

SAN DIEGO -- Who says a Republican and a Democrat can’t work together?

Carl DeMaio, a Republican, and Donna Frye, a Democrat, will talk about their bipartisan partnership on pension reform and a host of other city issues on Friday, March 5, at the Catfish Club luncheon.

City Attorney Jan Goldsmith will moderate the public forum at San Diego Hall of Champions, 2131 Pan American Plaza, in Balboa Park.

Vandals hit home of Chelsea King murder suspect’s mother

SAN DIEGO -- The Rancho Bernardo home of John Gardner’s mother was vandalized Tuesday night.

Gardner pleaded not guilty Wednesday on charges of rape and murder in connection with the death of Poway teen Chelsea King.

Large red letters were painted on the garage door at his mother’s house that read “Chelseas (sic) blood is on you. Move out.”

Suspect charged with rape, murder in Chelsea King case

SAN DIEGO – Suspect John Albert Gardner III was charged today with murder and a special circumstance allegation of murder, during the commission of a rape or attempted rape, in connection with the death of 17-year old Chelsea King.

The Poway teenager’s body was found Tuesday afternoon in a shallow grave on the south side of Lake Hodges, west of Interstate 15.

Gardner was also charged with assault with intent to commit rape in connection with an attack on a jogger on Dec. 27, 2009.

DeMaio: Room to trim city labor costs

SAN DIEGO – City Councilmember Carl DeMaio today released the “Annual Report on City Employee Compensation,” the seventh year he has done this.

This year’s report reveals the top salaries and pension payouts in city government and examines total compensation costs (salaries and benefits) for different city job classifications.

While the public repeatedly hears that city employees are taking “pay cuts,” the findings of the report indicate lingering problems and highlight the high costs of compensation packages awarded to San Diego city employees.

UCSD police discover KKK-style hood on campus

SAN DIEGO -- UC San Diego police Tuesday were investigating the discovery on campus of a white pillowcase crudely fashioned into a Ku Klux Klan- style hood.

The hood, with a hand-drawn symbol on it, was found about 11 p.m. Monday on a statue outside the main campus library, according to a UCSD statement.

A rose was inserted into the statue’s fingers. UCSD officials said police are processing the items for evidence, including fingerprints and DNA analysis, and will pursue those responsible to the full extent of applicable laws and the university’s code of conduct.
