Local filmmakers document serious issue of school safety for LGBT students

SAN DIEGO –-Violence and bullying against LGBT youth is a serious problem nationwide.

The harassment is so extreme that it is the leading factor attributed to LGBT high school dropout rates, which can also lead to homelessness and life on the margins for these vulnerable teens.

Many teachers and administrators know about the problems on their campuses, but they do not know what to do and lack the resources for training. Even though some states like California have existing laws to protect LGBT youth, school faculties are either unaware of those laws or do not know how implement them.

Fundraiser at Rich's tonight will send 5 local veterans to lobby Congress to end DADT

SAN DIEGO -- The Square Shooters, a Women's C Division team in the America's Finest City Softball League (AFCSL), is having fundraiser this weekend to raise money for multiple causes.

The first cause is to raise money for local woman Christynn Holt, who has ovarian cancer.

Dining Out For Life: Eating out today will benefit AIDS programs and services at The Center

SAN DIEGO – A record number of restaurants – 100 – will be participating today in San Diego’s fourth annual Dining Out For Life (DOFL) to benefit HIV/AIDS services and prevention programs at The Center.

SDGLN has been featuring some of the restaurants for the past month on the Causes page, including Alchemy in South Park, Urban Solace in North Park, Babycakes in Hillcrest and BiCE Ristorante in downtown San Diego. Today's DOFL feature, found on the Causes page, is on Ritual Tavern in North Park.

VIDEO: The San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus kicks off first season with spring concert

SAN DIEGO -- The recently-formed San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus will kick off its first season with a spring concert titled “Our House” during the weekend of May 1-2.

“We’ve pulled together some of the most amazing music ever written about the many things that mean ‘home’ to someone,” said Gary Holt, artistic director of the chorus.

The concert will also honor social service organizations in San Diego that work to help members of the LGBT community reclaim a sense of home through the life-affirming services they provide.

Midge Costanza memorial is today in Mission Valley

SAN DIEGO – A memorial service for Margaret “Midge” Costanza will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at the Town and Country Hotel in Mission Valley.
 
Costanza, who had been battling cancer, died March 23, at Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest.  She was 77.
 
After a long political and activist career, Costanza settled in San Diego in 1990.  She is widely known as the pre-eminent activist for women’s and gay causes, serving on President Jimmy Carter’s administration in 1977 and 1978.
 

Friday forum to offer comprehensive approach to cyberbullying

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego chapter of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) will host a forum on Friday, April 23, to offer a comprehensive approach to cyberbullying.

Cyberbullying is a growing problem that affects almost half of all U.S. teens. Because this harassment occurs online or via text messaging, it takes place out of view of adults, leaving them unaware of the problem or unsure of how to respond.

San Diego Pride to host town hall meeting on Monday, May 3

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego LGBT Pride board will hold its second town hall meeting of the year to share with the community updated information about this year’s 36th annual weekend celebration, scheduled for July 17 and 18.

The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 3, at The Center, 3909 Centre St. in Hillcrest.

Board members and staff will field questions and collect input regarding the summer events, which feature a milelong parade on July 17 and a two-day festival with headline performers on July 17 and 18 in Balboa Park.

San Diego County Registrar and Republicans accused of legal violations at taxpayer expense

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego County Democratic Party (SDCDP) yesterday named the County Registrar of Voters and the Republican Party as conspirators in a legal violation regarding postage subsidies.

The SDCDP plans to report the violation to the Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC).

The SDCDP alleges that the County Registrar of Voters, at taxpayer expense, will insert partisan campaign literature into the official sample ballots mailed to Republican voters next month.
