Millions pledge to wear purple on Spirit Day, Oct. 20

NEW YORK - SDGLN, E! Network, Alyssa Milano, Ryan Seacrest, Giuliana Rancic, MSNBC's Thomas Roberts, star of Bravo's "Real Housewives of NYC" Jill Zarin, Khloe Kardashian, Cyndi Lauper, Marc Malkin and Joel Burns are among those who today joined the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) in pledging to wear purple on Wednesday, Oct. 20, to show support for the victims of anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) bullying.

BREAKING NEWS: Judge Phillips keeps DADT injunction in place, but DOJ plans to appeal

RIVERSIDE -- U.S. District Court Judge Virginia A. Phillips this afternoon tentatively rejected the Department of Justice’s request for a stay of her worldwide injunction that bars enforcement of the military’s discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

It was a tentative decision, however, as the judge would issue a formal ruling on the matter either later today or tomorrow.

DOJ attorneys vowed to appeal the case to the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco.

ACLU sues Sheriff’s Department in Mississippi on behalf of corrections officer fired for being gay

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit today (Oct. 18) on behalf of Andre Cooley, a corrections officer for juvenile detainees with an exemplary record who was fired when his supervisors discovered that he was gay. The lawsuit claims that Cooley's constitutional rights were violated by the Forrest County Sheriff's Department and his superior officers.

Gay groups to Senate hopeful Ken Buck: Get your facts right

WASHINGTON – On NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday, Colorado Republican Senate candidate and Tea Party darling Ken Buck called homosexuality a choice and compared it to alcoholism – a theory debunked by the American Psychological Association and the American Psychiatric Association.

Buck’s extremist views and prior lapses of judgment show he is not worthy of representing the citizens of Colorado in U.S. Senate.

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and One Colorado call on Buck to correct his dangerous statements immediately.

VIDEO: Advocates rally in Raleigh, N.C., to support lesbian couple ejected from shopping center

RALEIGH, N.C. — At Cameron Village in Raleigh on Sunday, about 100 people gathered to send a message of tolerance and togetherness. The demonstration was sparked when a security officer at the shopping center asked a lesbian couple to leave Wednesday for showing some affection.

George York, president of York Properties, which manages the center, met with the couple Saturday, issued a written apology and promised additional sensitivity training for all security personnel.

“It shouldn't be happening in 2010,” said Tracy Hollister. “This happens, not just here but all over the place.”

Palm Center: Halt to DADT policy causing ZERO problems

SANTA BARBARA – Almost a week since a federal judge in Riverside issued a global injunction stopping the enforcement of the discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) policy, the military has not reported any problems, the Palm Center says.

The think tank at the University of California Santa Barbara has been tracking incidents after Secretary of Defense Robert Gates warned that the suspension of DADT, which prevents gays and lesbians from serving openly, would have “enormous consequences for our troops.”

NEW YORK – More than 10,000 young Americans tweeted questions for President Barack Obama on Thursday at a youth town hall sponsored by MTV, BET and CMT.

The youth asked tough questions about education, the economy and LGBT issues.

In the following videos, Obama talks about sexual orientation, cyberbulling and the military’s controversial “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy that prohibits gays and lesbians from serving openly.

The president seems to stumble somewhat in his answers on the three videos, hedging his responses to the questions.

VIDEO: Lesbian couple say they were forced to leave N.C. shopping center for kiss on cheek

RALEIGH, N.C. — A lesbian couple say they were forced to leave Cameron Village in Raleigh after eating lunch because they were kissing in public.

Caitlin Breedlove says she and her girlfriend were sitting on a bench with their arms around each other and had kissed briefly on the cheek when, she says, a security guard approached them, told them that “being affectionate” was “inappropriate” and asked them to leave because "no one wants to see that at Cameron Village."
