Transgender identity bill passed by California Assembly panel

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Assembly Bill 1121, authored by Assemblymember Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) and co-sponsored by Transgender Law Center and Equality California, passed the Assembly Committee on Judiciary today.

The bill will help ensure that transgender people have access to identity documents that accurately reflect the name and gender that correspond to their gender identity. The bill will next go to the Assembly Appropriations Committee.

San Francisco police precincts establish LGBT safe zones

SAN FRANCISCO -- The police chief said Monday that the city's 10 precincts will have space designated as safe havens for LGBT people to report crimes.

Police Chief Greg Suhr said colorful signs labeled "LGBT Safe Zone" will be posted inside precincts so that LGBT people can be assured that they will be treated with respect, dignity and compassion.

"We're a police department for everybody," Suhr said.

The police chief said he was working to change a distrust of the men and women in blue, and to reshape the department into a progressive, accepting police force.

Gay man from West Hollywood dies of meningitis

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – A 33-year-old lawyer who contracted bacterial meningitis died at 6:42 pm Saturday after being removed from life support, his family says.

“Tonight our family made the incredibly difficult decision to remove my brother Brett from life support. He died peacefully surrounded by our family and friends,” Brett’s brother, Brian Shaad, said in a statement issued on behalf of the family.

WeHo official warns of deadly meningitis strain

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – A deadly strain of bacterial meningitis, similar to the one that has been killing men who have sex with men (MSM) in New York City, has been found in California, health officials say.

Los Angeles area officials have issued a health warning and urged MSM to take safety precautions. If caught early enough, the disease can be successfully treated with antibiotics, and a vaccine is available.

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- Two women have filed a lawsuit, claiming they were drugged and raped by employees of one of the hottest restaurant/bars in West Hollywood -- The Abbey.

The club has been a fixture in WeHo for 15 years. According to the lawsuit ... a gay woman who says she had never had sexual relations with a man was at The Abbey with her girlfriend in November 2011. She says she and her girlfriend had a fight, which upset the alleged victim. She ordered a drink at the bar and claims it was laced with a date rape drug.

State accuses WeHo nightclub Micky’s of lewd conduct violations

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- Micky’s nightclub, the popular Boystown gay bar known for its go-go dancing events, is under state investigation for 14 counts of lewd conduct and two counts of giving away alcoholic beverages, according to the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC).

For now, ABC has only filed accusations against Micky’s, which, after being offered a suspension as penalty instead chose to have a hearing to make its case. A date has not yet been set for that hearing.
