Majority of San Francisco residents oppose renaming airport after Harvey Milk

San Francisco Chamber of Commerce last month and published Friday showed that a majority of the city’s residents oppose renaming San Francisco International Airport after slain gay civil rights leader Harvey Milk.

The poll found that only 31% of likely voters supported the change, while 61% were opposed.

Field Poll: Record number of Californians support marriage equality

SAN DIEGO – More than 6 in10 Californians now support marriage equality, according to the latest Field Poll, reaching a historical high.

The new poll shows support is growing in all categories, including among Republicans and Protestants.

The poll reveals that 61% of Californians back same-sex marriage and 32% oppose. The numbers in a 2010 poll showed 51% in support and 42% in opposition.

California Assembly Speaker, legal scholars file brief opposing Prop 8

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Speaker John A. Pérez (D-Los Angeles) today joined with 22 legal scholars from across the nation to file an amicus brief in the case of Hollingsworth V. Perry, in opposition to Proposition 8, which took away equal marriage rights in the state of California.

The brief states that Proposition 8 also eliminated the ability of those seeking equal marriage rights to pursue those rights through their elected representatives.

Santa Monica counter-protesters overwhelm Westboro protesters | VIDEO

SANTA MONICA, Calif. – A handful of anti-gay protesters from the Kansas hate group Westboro Baptist Church showed up outside Santa Monica High on Monday to protest the school’s Gay Straight Alliance (GSA).

The haters were greeted across the street by hundreds of counter-protesters, who held up signs in support of LGBT students and a large rainbow flag.

Logan Henderson, president of the school’s GSA, said via email:

Right now, the Westboro Baptist Church is outside my high school telling me and my friends that we're sinful, tainted, damned.

Coalition of national and San Francisco leaders rally for Harvey Milk SFO

SAN FRANCISCO - A growing coalition of more than 20 local, state and national organizations, more than a dozen local elected leaders, and hundreds of San Francisco residents have joined forces to urge the Board of Supervisors to support Supervisor David Campos's Harvey Milk SFO Charter Amendment.

“As San Francisco’s own shining example of heroism, adding Harvey’s name to our global gateway reaffirms the values of San Franciscans and civil rights supporters globally. He’s a symbol of inclusion and courage that we can all be proud of,” said Stuart Milk, Harvey Milk’s nephew.

Toni Atkins bill would strengthen California's coastal protections

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) today introduced legislation that will give the California Coastal Commission the power to levy penalties against those who disregard orders to stop violating the California Coastal Act.

AB 976 will bring Coastal Commission authority in line with most other state agencies tasked with enforcing environmental laws.

Rally set for Friday to support naming San Francisco airport after Harvey Milk

SAN FRANCISCO -- The coalition formed to support the Harvey Milk SFO effort will rally at noon Friday, Feb. 22, at City Hall to urge Supervisors to support Supervisor David Campos’ legislation.

The coalition is made up of national, statewide and San Francisco based organizations and leaders, all of which have lent their voices to the growing chorus supporting adding Harvey Milk’s name to San Francisco International Airport.

California bill would remove state tax exemption for youth groups that discriminate

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- On the heels of the controversy surrounding the Boys Scouts of America's policy to exclude members of the LGBT community as Scouts or adult leaders, state Sen. Ricardo Lara (D-Long Beach) and Equality California today announced the introduction of new legislation that would remove a state tax exemption for any youth group, including the Boy Scouts, that discriminate against members and leaders on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Prop 8 judge speaks out as case reaches Supreme Court

SAN FRANCISCO – Vaughn Walker, the federal judge who made the historic ruling that California’s Proposition 8 was unconstitutional, says in an interview with the San Jose Mercury News that he makes no predictions about how the U.S. Supreme Court will decide the appeal.

Walker, who has since retired from the bench, also said he was not shocked that Prop 8 supporters made a big deal that he was gay and in a long-term relationship. He called it a “Hail Mary” play insinuating that he was biased, a point decisively rejected by the appeals court.
