California moves to expand unemployment benefits for same-sex couples

SACRAMENTO - The California State Senate passed the Unemployment Benefits Act (AB 2055) on Monday in a 23-11 vote.

The bill seeks to ensure that same-sex couples in California have access to unemployment benefits. Previously approved by the state Assembly, the bill was introduced by Assemblymember Hector De La Torre, D-South Gate, and sponsored by Equality California.

Presbyterians put the Rev. Jane Spahr on trial for conducting legal gay weddings in California

NAPA – The Rev. Jane Spahr, a retired Presbyterian minister, goes on trial here today for marrying 16 same-sex couples in 2008 when California legally allowed gay weddings.

Spahr, 67, is accused by the Prosecuting Committee of the Presbytery of the Redwoods of violating the constitution of the Presbyterian Church of the United States. The panel cited W-4.9001 of the Book of Order, which says that church officers cannot represent that a same-sex ceremony is a marriage.

California Legislature approves removing “gay cure” language from state code

SACRAMENTO – The California State Senate on Monday passed a bill that would repeal a section of the California Welfare and Institutions code that instructs the State Department of Mental Health to conduct research into the “causes and cures of homosexuality,” with the implication that lesbian, gay, and bisexual Californians are sexual deviants, potential sex offenders and a threat to children.

The bill, AB 2199, was passed in a unanimous 36-0 vote that included bipartisan support and is sponsored by Equality California and was introduced by Assemblymember Bonnie Lowenthal, D-Long Beach.

California Legislature endorses repeal of federal Defense of Marriage Act

SACRAMENTO – The California State Senate on Monday approved a joint resolution, AJR 19, calling on the U.S. Congress and President Barack Obama to immediately repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which explicitly forbids the federal government or any federal agency from recognizing state-sanctioned marriages between same-sex couples.

Introduced by Assemblymember Julia Brownley, D-Santa Monica, and sponsored by Equality California, the joint resolution was passed by a bipartisan vote of 22-12.

California passes bill eliminating legal separation barriers for same-sex couples

SACRAMENTO — The California State Senate passed the Separation Equity Act, AB 2700, by a 26-9 bipartisan vote on Thursday.

Previously approved by the state Assembly, AB 2700 seeks to create a consolidated form and procedure to simultaneously dissolve a civil marriage and domestic partnership.

Co-sponsored by Equality California and the Conference of California Bar Associations, the bill was introduced by Assemblymember Fiona Ma, D-San Francisco.

California passes law strengthening religious freedom for clergy

SACRAMENTO -- The California Assembly on Thursday passed the Civil Marriage Religious Freedom Act (SB 906) in a 46-25 vote.

The bill, introduced by Sen. Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, and co-sponsored by Equality California and California Council of Churches IMPACT, protects clergy from performing any civil marriage that is contrary to the tenets of his or her faith.

Gay-rights foes want to overturn Wisconsin’s domestic partnership law

In filing its challenge to Wisconsin's domestic partnership law, a group opposed to gay rights claims it's too similar to marriage.

“The same-sex only, statewide domestic partnership registry mimics marriage,” Julaine Appling, executive director of Wisconsin Family Action (WFA), told Wisconsin Radio Network.

The case lists four WFA board members as plaintiffs and claims they have been harmed because their tax revenues are being used to fund the registry.

VIDEO: Same-sex couples across California cancel wedding plans

SAN DIEGO -- For many same-sex couples, Wednesday evening was going to be a time for celebration. Across California, county clerks were preparing to extend office hours until 8 p.m. to accommodate the flood of same-sex couples eager to finally obtain a marriage license.

Same-sex weddings in California, however, have once again been called off – at least until December.

Let us hope that the deposit on the floral arrangements is refundable because for now, California will have to wait a little while longer for a second dawn of marriage equality.

As expected, the Ninth Circuit granted a stay – a delay or postponement – of Judge Vaughn Walker’s Aug. 4 order allowing same-sex marriage. This is one of the many procedural hurdles that marriage equality will have to jump before it becomes a reality in the Golden State. But, while we should get our deposits back on any marriages planned for Aug. 18 or later, there is no reason to lose hope.

BREAKING NEWS: Gay weddings put on ice in California as appeals court issues emergency stay

This afternoon, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals granted Proposition 8 supporters an emergency order staying District Judge Vaughn Walker’s ruling last week that would have allowed gay marriages to resume in California on Wednesday.
