San Diegan Dr. Bill Beck named “California Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Hero”

SACRAMENTO – Dr. Bill Beck of San Diego was honored today in the Capitol as a “California Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Hero.”

“With quiet perseverance and without seeking recognition for himself, Bill Beck has developed a sustainable strategy for LGBT community giving through the San Diego Human Dignity Foundation,” said Sen. Christine Kehoe, D-San Diego.

IRS adopts state domestic-partner property law

In a significant move for same-sex couples, the Internal Revenue Service has decided to recognize California's community property law and treat the income earned by California registered domestic partners as community property income for federal income tax purposes.

The decision, which was issued in a private-letter ruling on Friday, reverses a position the IRS took in 2006, when it said California's registered domestic partners should each report on their own federal tax return only the income they personally earned, not one-half of their community income.

PETCO settles consumer protection case for $1.75 million

SAN DIEGO -- For the second time in six years, a court has ordered Petco Animal Supplies (PETCO) to pay penalties in a civil law enforcement case alleging California customers were overcharged and animals were neglected or mistreated in Petco stores.

The company paid $1.75 million in penalties and costs to resolve the case, which was filed June 2, in the San Diego Superior Court. The company did not admit liability.

PETCO paid more than $850,000 to resolve similar allegations in a 2004 law enforcement case brought by California prosecutors.

California Assembly passes bill to restrict carrying guns openly in public

SACRAMENTO – Legislation to restrict the practice of openly carrying handguns in public was passed by the full Assembly on June 1.

The bill now moves to the Senate.

Support for Assembly Bill 1934, authored by San Diego Assembly Member Lori Saldaña, had been on the rise.
