Bisexual network celebrates 25 years

SAN FRANCISCO -- The world was a very different place a quarter century ago. AIDS was decimating the gay and bisexual men's community while bi women and lesbians cared for their brothers. At the same time the bi community was under attack, being scapegoated as the carriers of HIV/AIDS to the straight community.

The Bay Area Bisexual Network was launched in 1987 to combat the negative image and misconceptions about bisexual people and to create community and a movement locally.

L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center raises $700,000 at post-election gala

LOS ANGELES -- L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center CEO Lorri Jean just couldn’t contain herself. She was so excited by the results of the Nov. 6 elections and marriage initiatives, she left the podium and did a little “happy dance” before an appreciative audience of more than 1,000 at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel Saturday night, Nov. 10 (captured beautifully by photographer Lydia Marcus).

Lambda Legal seeks reversal on some sex-sting convictions in Palm Springs

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Lambda Legal argued before the Appellate Division of the Superior Court of Riverside County on Friday that the June 2009 sex sting operation in the Warm Sands neighborhood of Palm Springs constituted discriminatory enforcement of the laws and asked the Court to reverse several convictions resulting from that operation.

Lambda Legal had filed a friend-of-the-court brief in this case earlier this year, and was granted permission by the court to present oral argument at the hearing.

Surfrider Foundation to rally to stop seismic testing off California's Central Coast

SANTA MONICA, Calif. -- The Surfrider Foundation is calling on supporters to rally on Wednesday, Nov. 14, in opposition of a proposed seismic testing project along California’s Central Coast.

The rally will take place during the California Coastal Commission meeting at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.

Straight ally upsets Rep. Mary Bono Mack in Palm Springs area

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – LGBT voters in droves helped elect Dr. Raul Ruiz to an upset victory over U.S. Rep. Mary Bono Mack on Tuesday, according to unofficial results.

Ruiz, who campaigned as a straight ally of the LGBT community, ousted Bono Mack, who is the stepmother of transgender activist Chaz Bono.

Bono Mack, who was a seven-term U.S. representative and a Republican, had a checkered voting record on LGBT rights and represented an area where the LGBT community is growing and showing its political clout.

San Francisco to provide equal health care access to transgender patients

SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco Health Commission, the governing and policy-making body of the city's Department of Public Health, announced Tuesday its intent to remove transgender exclusions from the "Healthy San Francisco" health access program.

In a unanimous vote, the commission said it would implement the change, based on the recommendations that were set forth in a resolution authored by Supervisor Scott Wiener and passed by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors last month.

California Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez welcomes two more LGBT Speakers across U.S.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez (D-Los Angeles), the first openly gay person to be elected Speaker of a legislative body, was unanimously chosen by California Assembly Democrats to continue serving as their leader.

Pérez is one of a handful of LGBT Speakers across the U.S. Tuesday’s elections will add two more LGBT Speakers.

In Colorado, state Rep. Mark Ferrandino was chosen by Democrats today to serve as Speaker of the Colorado House of Representatives in January.

In Oregon, state Rep. Tina Kotek is on track to be elected Speaker in that state.

Openly gay Asian American first LGBT person of color in U.S. Congress

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Openly gay Democrat Mark Takano beat his Republican opponent John Tavaglione by a double-digit margin in the race for California's U.S. House District 41, and will become the first LGBT person of color in the U.S. Congress.

Takano won 56.4% of the vote tally compared to Tavaglione's 43.6 percent. All precincts in Riverside County have been reported, however about 183,000 vote-by-mail, provisional and damaged ballots remained to be counted.

Palm Springs Spring Pride to offer expanded lineup this weekend

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Besides being a resort city popular with Southern Californians and visitors from around the world, Palm Springs is home to a vibrant LGBT community that likes to step out and show its colors in the desert.

The GLBT History Museum reopening today after vandalism

SAN FRANCISCO – Vandals shattered two plate-glass windows early Monday at The GLBT History Museum in San Francisco’s Castro district, but apparently didn’t enter the building.

Undeterred, the museum plans to reopen today, Oct. 30, from 11 am to 7 pm.

“Visitors will see boarded-up windows for a few days, but that's not going to stop us. With your support, the museum will soon be back in top form!” officials posted on Facebook today.
