California: Vice mayor says he was verbally assaulted for being Asian-American, gay

CAMPBELL, Calif. -- Campbell's openly gay, Asian-American vice mayor said on Monday he was verbally assaulted by a woman this weekend on his way to a community festival for his race and for his sexual orientation.

Evan Low told NBC Bay Area that a woman came up to him on Saturday about 3 p.m. as he was heading toward the annual Oktoberfest festivities on Campbell Avenue.

"She pointed her finger at me in the shape of a gun and said, "Bang (expletive), die. Go back to China, you will die," Low said. The expletive was a derogatory word for a gay man.

Art show to celebrate West Hollywood's rainbow crosswalks

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- Following the installation of rainbow colored crosswalks for LGBT Pride Month in June, which the City Council recently voted to make permanent, artist Martin Duvander will host his first one-man show, "Rainbow Crosswalks," in celebration of the new landmarks.

VIDEO: Transgender woman named city manager in California

GREENFIELD, Calif. – The Greenfield City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to name Susan A. Stanton as city manager.

She will take over on Nov. 12.

Stanton made international news in 2007 for being fired after 14 years as city manager of Largo, Fla., after announcing plans to have a sex change. She was named Steven Stanton at birth.

California Boy Scout told he won’t receive his Eagle medal because he is gay

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, Calif. — A 17-year-old high school senior from this hillside area just east of Oakland, Calif., has been told by the Boy Scouts that he is not eligible to be awarded the rank of Eagle Scout because he is gay.

Imperial Valley College displays first-ever LGBTQ Club exhibit

IMPERIAL, Calif. -- Setting a bit of history, the LGBTQ Club at Imperial Valley College displayed its first-ever art exhibit, "Out In The Valley," on Thursday night.

The exhibit, which includes photography, paintings, drawings, needlework and mix-media, will be on view through Oct. 26 in the Juanita Salazar Lowe Art Gallery on campus.

Wiener introduces nudity ban in San Francisco

N FRANCISCO -- Nudity will be front and center at San Francisco City Hall now that gay District 8 Supervisor Scott Wiener has moved forward with plans to ban nudists from the city's sidewalks and public plazas.

Last month the Bay Area Reporter broke the news that Wiener, who represents the gay Castro district, was looking at outlawing public nudity. At the board's October 2 meeting he introduced an ordinance that would amend the city's police code to require people be clothed on public streets and parklets as well as on transit vehicles and at Muni stations.

LOS ANGELES – Sahara Davenport, who made a name for herself on the second season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and who recently released a single "Go Off," has died. She was 27.

Davenport's birth name is Antoine Ashley.

Anti-gay Liberty Counsel to sue California for banning "ex-gay" therapy

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The homophobic Liberty Counsel said today that it will sue the State of California after Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law a bill that bans "ex-gay" therapy.

The group, which calls itself a "nonprofit legal, education and policy group advancing life, family and freedom," supports Religious Right causes and is vigorously anti-gay.

Schwarzenegger reveals he officiated two gay weddings while California governor

Former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who maintained a public position of opposing same-sex marriage, revealed in an interview with CBS’ “60 Minutes” on Sunday that he presided over two ceremonies of gay couples while in office.

Schwarzenegger, who was California’s governor from 2003 until early 2011, publicly opposed legalizing same-sex marriage in the state, twice vetoing legislation that would have done just that.

New California law ensures equal access to fertility services for same-sex couples

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- California Gov. Jerry Brown over the weekend signed a bill to ensure that women in same-sex relationships and single women can access fertility services on the same terms as women in different-sex relationships.

Assembly Bill 2356, authored by Assemblymember Nancy Skinner and co-sponsored by Equality California and the National Center for Lesbian Rights, allows women using known donors to access certain fertility procedures that are less expensive and more effective.
