PALM SPRINGS -- January begins the countdown to the largest annual lesbian party in the world -- The Dinah -- which takes place in the quintessential gay-friendly desert oasis known as Palm Springs, this coming March 28 - April 1, 2012.
In its 22nd year, The Dinah just announced their main headliner for the weekend, the legendary R & B Diva, Chaka Khan.
Nicknamed the Queen of Funk, Chaka Khan will perform at the height of the weekend's "The Dinah Goes to Rio" dance party event at the Palm Springs Convention Center, Saturday, March 31, and she is without a doubt, the biggest name to ever perform.
The iconic music legend has decided to bring her entire touring band to the desert to wow her lesbian fans in attendance and this is no small feat.
The Dinah has other artists and concert venues throughout the weekend, but the Saturday night Convention Center event is its largest and considered the main event of the four-day weekend, full of women, music, sun, dancing and comedy.
Chaka Khan's personal hit factory will be the perfect match for the Saturday night dance extravaganza.
Born Yvette Marie Stevens in Chicago, Khan is world-renowned for the collassal hits she has amassed over her more than three decades: "Tell Me Something Good" (with Rufus), "Ain't Nobody (Loves Me Better)," "Through the Fire," "I'm Every Woman," and "I Feel For You," among dozens of others.
During her long career, Khan has collaborated with some of the biggest names in songwriting and music history, including Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, David Foster, Ashford and Simpson, Prince, Robert Palmer, Whitney Houston (who at 15 sang background vocals on Khan's original release of "I'm Every Woman" and then made it a #1 hit years later herself), Mary J. Blige and Gladys Knight.
Khan has sold over 200 million records worldwide, with eight Platinum albums, six Gold records, three #1 US singles, 10 Grammy awards, and countless other awards and nominations. She is currently a 2012 nominee for the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame.
Mariah Hanson, founder and producer of Club Skirts Presents The Dinah, has long proven herself to have a keen eye when it comes to booking up-and-coming artists for her annual lesbian soireé in the desert. Many of her choices have skyrocketed to superstardom immediately after playing at the annual mega-party, including Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Keisha, Colbie Caillat, etc.
This year's booking is a real treat for Hanson.
"Presenting Chaka Khan on my main stage is a lifelong dream of mine. Chaka is a legend and my customers are in for a rare treat. Her decision to bring her full touring band speaks to not only The Dinah’s growing stature as a music festival, but what a rare and magical evening we are all in store for," Hanson said in a statement.
The Chaka Khan Foundation offers help and education to women and children at risk, including those with autism or victims of domestic violence and substance abuse.
Those wishing to attend this phenomenal lesbian weekend can buy tickets for Chaka Khan individually or in various weekend packages. For more information, visit the brand new The Dinah website.
