San Diego Humane Society to provide education and animal interaction for youth

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Humane Society and SPCA has teamed up with Pro Kids to provide Humane Education through animal enrichment to under-served, low-income children.

Project TRUST (Teaching Respect Using Sympathy and Training) is an after-school program which provides humane education and hands-on animal training. It gives the children a positive and educational after-school activity, while also providing weekly enrichment and socialization for the animals as they await adoption.

“Project TRUST is designed to teach children to have compassion and respect for all living things, starting at a young age,” said Annie Petersen, Education Manager for the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA. “Exposing them to animals and developing that respect early on has a substantial, life-long impact and builds a more compassionate society, which makes programs like Project TRUST so essential.”

The mission of Pro Kids mission is to challenge under-served youth to excel in life by promoting character development, life-skills, and values through education and the game of golf. The partnership with the San Diego Humane Society gives youth who participate in the Pro Kids program additional opportunities to learn.

“Teaming up with the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA for Project TRUST is a natural fit for Pro Kids. It is part of our mission to teach compassion and respect to young people. We are grateful for the opportunity to extend those lessons to include our animal friends” said Felipe Salazar, Program Manager for Pro Kids.
