Theme set for 2013 Greater Palm Springs Pride

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- “It’s Time” is the theme for the annual Palm Springs Pride Celebration scheduled for Nov. 2-3.

A nod to the past, the theme also represents new hope, new beginnings and future progress toward equality. The theme sets the tone for the 27th annual celebration and will be a call for the community to step off the sidewalk and into the street and march for equality in the annual Pride parade.

The Greater Palm Springs Pride board of directors said:

South Bay Pride: It's not just a party

A few months ago, a friend said, “I like to focus myself on other endeavors besides throwing just a party” in response to discussing the work that went into organizing a Pride event.

Although I didn’t receive this well, I let it slide. After all, we all have to choose where to focus our energies. Even so, this statement has stuck with me because Pride is not “just a party.”

Life with Benny: The kids are all right

As we continue to hear news every day about kids being cruel to each other in schools and online - which has led to a number of lives being taken far too soon - it was refreshing to see an example of school children doing something to combat the bullying that plagues our communities.

San Diego journalist joins GLAAD staff

Rex Wockner, a veteran journalist based in San Diego, announced today via his Newsclips list, that he started working for GLAAD on Tuesday afternoon.

"I'll be doing writing, editing and brainstorming, and also will focus on engagement with the grassroots and netroots," Wockner told his Newsclips subscribers. "I remain in San Diego."

Lesbian named to key job at Jewish Family Service

SAN DIEGO -- Dana Toppel has been named as Chief Program Officer at Jewish Family Service (JFS).

Toppel has been an instrumental part of the agency’s success since starting with Jewish Family Service nearly four years ago and most recently held the position of Divisional Director of Clinical and Educational Services.

Pepperdine to offer scholarship to LGBT-supportive students

MALIBU, Calif. — Pepperdine University has announced a new scholarship for “students who have demonstrated a commitment to the LGBT community,” according to the university’s student newspaper, the Pepperdine Graphic.

Survey: Despite optimism, financial awareness gap still high for LGBT investors

SAN FRANCISCO – LGBT investors indicate high levels of post-election optimism about the political and economic direction of the country, as well as confidence about their own financial future, according to a recent Wells Fargo nationwide survey.

LGBT investors also show a great deal of optimism around the future of same-sex marriage and civil unions.

Hillcrest parking initiatives to launch this month
