San Diego Pride Spirit of Stonewall Awards nominations underway

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego LGBT Pride has opened the community nomination process for its annual Spirit of Stonewall Awards, which will be presented during the 2012 Spirit of Stonewall Rally, kicking off the America’s Pride events on July 20.

En route from San Diego to Washington, D.C., I nearly jumped out of my airplane seat reading Max Blumenthal’s book “Republican Gomorrah” about the demise of the Republican Party. His book was written in 2010 but remains good background material to explain the present circus we are witnessing as the remnants of the Republican Party attempt to choose a viable candidate to run for President.

Palm Springs Pride picks 2012 theme, sets dates

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- The board of directors of Greater Palm Springs Pride has selected "Long May It Wave" as the theme for its annual celebration, to be held in November.

The theme will set the tone for the 26th annual celebration and will be visible on parade floats and in marketing materials promoting Palm Springs as a welcoming and inclusive LGBT destination.

COMMUNITY PROFILE: Ebony Burnett Aldridge

Although she was born at Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa, Ebony Burnett Aldridge was raised in the South -- in Millbrook, Alabama. The 30-year old systems engineer is a small business owner with a passion for social justice and giving back to her community.

Burnett, who moved back to San Diego five years ago, has been with her wife Krissy for six years. The couple celebrated their anniversary on Valentine's Day.

Nation's first LGBT Senior Center opens in New York City

NEW YORK -- The SAGE Center, the first full-time LGBT senior center in the U.S., opened with much fanfare and joy on Thursday in the Manhattan neighborhood of Chelsea.

"Words can't express what having a place like this is. Because most seniors do not want to go to regular senior centers and so this is just wonderful," ceremony attendee Betty Weems told NY1.com.

FilmOut San Diego offers 7-day guest pass to FIT Athletic Club

SAN DIEGO -- As a perk for supporters of FilmOut San Diego a 7-day guest pass to FIT Athletic Club is being offered.

FIT is downtown San Diego's premier athletic club, featuring a wide variety of workout equipment, classes, and amenities in an upscale environment. The club also includes a roof-top swimming pool, lounge area, and a view of Petco Park.

Those who have not visited the club before are welcome to activate the guest pass, but must do so by March 22.

Afghan Women's Writing Project mentor to headline Spirit of the Barrio luncheon

SAN DIEGO -- Tickets are now available for Family Health Centers of San Diego's (FHCSD) next "Spirit of the Barrio Luncheon," to be held March 16, featuring award-winning author and international women's empowerment leader Barbara Field.

The tamale lunch has become one of the organization's beloved traditions, bringing more than 500 people together for networking, education, entertainment and community building. Individuals, businesses, corporate sponsors, political and community leaders alike typically attend the quarterly lunch program that raises money for FHCSD.
