PRIDE group at USD to celebrate 21 years at Saturday event

SAN DIEGO -- PRIDE - The University of San Diego's (USD) LGBT student group - will celebrate its 21st anniversary with a special fundraiser celebration on Saturday, Nov. 10.

Students, faculty, alumni, friends and supporters of USD's LGBT community are welcome to attend the event, which is being sponsored by alumni of USD's PRIDE group.

Founded in 1991, the group has a long history of bringing LGBT issues to the forefront of the private Catholic university.

SDSU to host the Big Gay BBQ

SAN DIEGO -- As a Halloween treat, San Diego State University's (SDSU) LGBT Student Union (LGBTSU) will host the twice yearly Big Gay BBQ, today from 5-11 pm.

Since this semester's event falls on Halloween, the event will have a Halloween theme and include a costume contest with prizes. There will also be a resource fair, free food and drinks, a marriage photo booth, open mic and dance party.

Lafayette Hotel to host LGBT History Month Happy Hour

SAN DIEGO -- In honor of LGBT History Month, which is observed each year in October, Imig's Kitchen Bar, located within The Lafayette Hotel, will host a special happy hour on Tuesday, Oct. 30, from 6-8 pm.

Guests at the event will be able to enjoy specialty cocktails named after LGBT icons, as well as complimentary hors d'oeuvres and half-off bottles of wine throughout the event. Short bios of the 31 icons honored this month will be displayed in the venue for attendees to read and learn about.

Assemblymember Toni Atkins to present financial wellness workshop

SAN DIEGO -- The ongoing recession has created financial challenges for millions of Americans. Whether it be due to a job layoff, loss of retirement income or other fallout, Assemblymember Toni Atkins wants her constituents to know that help is available.

Atkins has partnered with the Association of Credit Counseling Professionals and the San Diego County Identity Theft Resource Center to present a Financial Wellness Workshop on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 10 am to noon. Historical leather community exhibit to be displayed at Palm Springs Pride

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- A traveling exhibit of alternative sexuality materials dating to the 1700s will be on display at this year's annual Palm Springs LGBT Pride celebration, to be held Nov. 3-4.

A portion of the Carter-Johnson Leather Library will be a part of the "Fetish in the Outfield" leather area within the Palm Springs Pride Festival, and include items such as artwork, books, DVDs, magazines, newsletters, newspapers, pamphlets, photographs, club and event pins, posters and other materials.

San Diego Democrats for Equality accepting Freedom Awards nominations

SAN DIEGO -- Nominations are now open for the San Diego Democrats for Equality's annual Freedom Awards, which will be handed out at a ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 17.

The awards program includes six honors named in honor of prominent club members, community leaders or Democrats who made great strides for equality in their lifetime. The categories include awards for individuals, organizations, club members and non-club members who have provided service to the LGBT community and its struggle for equality.
