Local musician and singer Tori Roze gets messy and tries to kickstart her future

SAN DIEGO -- Victoria (Tori) Roze is the hardest working gal in local showbiz. Don't believe it?

Take a gander, for example, at her typical workload:

She works for the Village Hat Shop, moving between the Hillcrest and Seaport Village locations and produces the Female Fronted Bands at the Ruby Room in Hillcrest every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month.

She also models for art classes and manages her own band, while fiercely promoting and helping every other local band she can.

She headed straight for Los Angeles and hasn't looked back.

(Editor's Note: This is the second of a three part series on the Queer Queens of Qomedy event to benefit HRC.)

Anyone who is familiar with Fortune Feimster and her comedy would not expect her to be off running around on a soccer field, but that is exactly what she does on a weekly basis.

In fact, one recent evening while chatting with San Diego Gay & Lesbian News, she was on her way to take the field with her weekly Los Angeles team, Gays R Us.

"Yeah, I like to act like I'm 12," she said.

Gay couples who file jointly and defy federal income tax law face dilemma

Newlyweds Ruth Berman and Connie Kurtz are gearing up to file their first tax return as a married couple. Typically, couples grapple with the financial pros and cons of filing separately or jointly. Though either way, they tell the IRS they are married.

However, for Ruth and Connie, prominent gay activists who were married last summer in New York after the state approved gay marriage, income taxes are far more fraught. The U.S. government does not recognize their marriage. By law they must file their federal income tax returns individually.

Aunt Johnny: Pitching a tent with Rush Limbaugh and Kirk Cameron

Before you read any further, I should warn you I’m in a very bad mood.

My skin is inflamed, blotchy and chapped. My hair is hopelessly dry and brittle ... so the process of attempting a side-part would likely snap it right off like a stomped twig. Don’t even get me started on my cuticles. How I haven’t been mistaken for Tara Reid after being rescued from a deserted island bar after last-call, is beyond me.

In short, I’m a hot mess. Therefore, I cannot be responsible for the harsh tone I may take in recalling the events of this last week.

And it’s Kirk Cameron’s fault.

The Nested Lez: Break-ups suck!

Break-ups suck!

Don't freak out – Julie (my wife) and I did not break up. But in the 10+ years that we have been together, we have seen five long-term couples go their separate ways.

In four of these cases, I had only known the individuals as a part of the relationship.

In the other relationship, I knew one member for a long time before they became a couple; but still, the other member of the couple had also become an important part of my life (as they were together for at least 15 years).

VIDEO: Poppy Champlin to bring her Queer Queens of Qomedy to North Park

SAN DIEGO -- As a performer, you never forget your flops. Luckily, for lesbian comedian Poppy Champlin, only one from her stand-up career -- which has now lasted almost 30 years -- truly stands out.

That flop was many years ago in a Manchester, N.H. bar, where drag queen shows were the norm and mirrored walls were all the rage. She later recognized the audience just wasn't "invested" in her act; it just wasn't her demographic. "Sometimes a bad memory can be a good thing," she said.
