For Men

Pride - rainbows and flamingos here we come!

After a weekend of Independence Day pool parties, nights out at Rich’s and relaxing, I think I am ready to tackle the San Diego Pride season.

Ricky and I were driving last night and I asked him if he realized that our favorite time of the year was just a week away. Yes, next week is Pride Week in San Diego and I’m trying to get myself all rainbowed-up and ready for the glittery mess that will ensue.

Pop Op: What is really relevant?

Ah Pride! This year, more than ever before, it seems like I have all kinds of options, requests and opportunities to go to Pride celebrations than ever before. From San Diego to New York and many places in between, everyone talks about how their pride is better than the next.

Gearing up for SD Pride

I have this insatiable sweet tooth that I cannot seem to kick.

In general, I maintain a fairly healthy diet but if you place anything that has to do with chocolate in front of me, it will be devoured immediately; even worse, if it is a whole tray of chocolately goodness, I will most likely eat multiple quantities of whatever happens to be on the tray (brownies don’t last long in my presence).

I don't like to nag, but....

I don’t like to nag … ok, maybe I do get a bit of a thrill out of it … but this important.

Between my many antics that you’ve read about -- “Nairing” my armpits; hosting WET Underwear contests; Facebooking; and watching gays play flag football – I do like to keep involved in the community.

Actually, I am sort of addicted to being involved with the fight for LGBT rights in our community and can’t seem to get away from it. So sometimes my friends have to hear me go on and on about all the “amazing” organizations I am a part of and why they, too, should be involved.

Pop Op: In the scavenger hunt of life ...

This past weekend I competed in the annual Greater Los Angeles Scavenger Hunt, an unsanctioned event that some of my friends in Los Angeles put on every year.

Now before you jump to the conclusion that I am a total nerd here (which, btw, I prefer the term geek), this is a serious competition with some major money at stake. We all take this very serious. We also take our team uniforms very serious and this year we all dressed up like Justin Bieber (but ended up looking more like Lesbians Who Look Like Justin Bieber – google it, find the website, you will see what I mean).

Chasing "the scene" or making time for me?

Since about March, when my fellow gays began preparing their bodies for the summer, I declared that I would not tan this year. I was going to be comfortable in my skin, no matter how pasty or uneven the coloring on it might be.

I realized that I have done a pretty good job keeping a youthful appearance and don’t want to speed up the weathering of my skin just so I can have a few moments of “looking good” at a pool party (I also don’t look forward to the possibility of skin cancer).

Get ready to party at "Guys, Games and Grub" event on Wednesday

SAN DIEGO – Guys, do you need a fun and no-pressure way to meet other men?

Well, San Diego’s LGBT Community Center has just the answer in their monthly “Guys, Games and Grub” event.

The next gathering will begin at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 2, at the Center, 3909 Centre St.

GBT men 21 and older are invited to The Center for a fun night of games and mingling with men of all ages. Each month, the event attracts nearly 200 men.

Officials of The Center said they provide a wide variety of board games for participant. The event is free to attend.

Pop Op: Letting go

Getting Lost
So last weekend I finally got Lost. No, I am not talking about bad directions around LA. I am talking about understanding what Lost was about!

Didn’t watch it? Too bad.

I am a diehard fan and I have figured out a way to turn the finale into a column. Run with me here, because like the show, there is big leap in logic coming up. In the end, a big theme of the show was letting go … and it inspired me to write a column … but since that topic wasn’t sexy enough I thought to myself what should we let go of?

Speak up! Your community is listening

Events like the Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast always seem to inspire me. It’s easy for an activist to get burnt out, but being in a room with hundreds of other passionate people who care just as much about equality as I do, helped reignite any burned out flames I might have had (and I’m told my flames often burn a bit brighter).

When I got home from the breakfast and logged onto Facebook, a friend IM’d me to ask how San Diego’s second annual breakfast was. I told him that it was inspiring, well organized, and the light food was good.

Step up to the plate and get involved!

It seems like some people have the stereotype that others who are “involved” in the LGBT community are just all “crazy activists” who spend their weekends planning rallies and going door-to-door getting people to sign petitions. This is not appealing to them, so they use this stereotype as an excuse to justify not participating.

Certainly, there are some activists (most of them are not crazy) who do give hours of their lives to ensure a better, more equal future for us all, but there are really so many other ways to get involved.
