Family Legal Ease: Lesbian parentage - serious things you need to consider

If you are planning to have children with your loved one and your intention is that both parties have parental rights, there are steps that must be taken to preserve those rights.

This really applies to the lesbian community, as they are the ones trying to build families on flawed legal foundations, and although not all houses built on flawed foundations fall apart, too many do.

As a result, I'd like to start off this discussion with an entreaty; please be sure of what you are doing and consider the well-being of the children.

Editor’s note: The names in this story have been changed to protect the women's identities out of concern for their safety.

Five years ago, Fatima was 23 and studying law in Lahore, Pakistan. She wore blue jeans and a loose shirt and sported short boyish hair. That was the first sign she wasn't a typical Pakistani woman.

She leaned in to share a secret she had revealed to only a few other people before: "I'm lesbian," she said hesitantly.

Bisexual girl talk: How collateral discrimination ruined my date

Although I mostly tend to date men, I still consider myself to be a card-carrying bisexual.

I live right smack in the middle of Hillcrest, a disproportionate number of my friends are LGBT, and when I venture out to enjoy a night on the town, it’s rare that I find myself outside of the 92103. Describing myself as being LGBT friendly is an understatement.

At the same time, though, meeting single, heterosexual men in Hillcrest is like looking for a God-damned needle in a gaystack, so every now and then, when friends suggest hooking me up, I’ll bite at the bait.
