Couple takes action against florist for anti-gay discrimination

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said Wednesday it is representing a Kennewick, Wash., gay couple in seeking remedies from a florist that discriminated against them by refusing to provide flowers for their wedding.

A bisexual middle school student has become something of an LGBT celebrity in Florida this week, after her attempt to start a Gay-Straight Alliance club at her school became a countywide controversy.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, eighth-grader Bayli Silberstein, an openly bisexual 14-year-old, has been working to get a GSA at Carver Middle School since last year, and she now has the backing of the ACLU and many in her community.

Former gay and lesbian service members subject to discriminatory policy to get full separation pay

WASHINGTON – Former service members who are part of a class action lawsuit challenging a Defense Department policy that cuts in half the separation pay of those who have been honorably discharged for “homosexuality” will receive their full pay after a settlement announced today.

The American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of New Mexico had filed a class action lawsuit against the policy, which was not part of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" statute and so was not changed when that law was repealed.

Montana Supreme Court rejects equal benefits for same-sex couples

HELENA, Mont. -- The Montana Supreme Court on Monday upheld a lower court's decision to reject an "overly broad" request that same-sex couples receive the same protections and benefits as married heterosexual couples.

In a 4-3 decision, the Court sided with Helena, Mont., District Judge Jeffrey Sherlock when he dismissed the suit in April 2011.

ACLU challenges school's ban on "straight but supportive" T-shirts

CELINA, Ohio -- The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio on Thursday called on Celina High School administrators to reconsider their decision to prohibit students from wearing shirts that express their support of LGBT students, calling the ban "unconstitutional."

The ACLU action comes after some 20 students went to school Tuesday wearing home-made T-shirts that read “I Support… [Rainbow] Express Yourself” and “Straight but Supportive,” a show of support organized by sophomore Jimmy Walter.

GSA Network, parents, doctors sue school district over abstinence-only teaching

FRESNO, Calif. -- Gay-Straight Alliance Network today joined parents and physicians in suing the Clovis Unified School District over its high school abstinence-only-until-marriage sex education.

The lawsuit charges that the district is violating California law and putting teens' health at risk by teaching students misinformation and denying them critical instruction about condoms and contraception. A 2003 law requires that sexual health education in California's public schools be comprehensive, medically accurate, bias-free, and appropriate for students of all sexual orientations.
