Study shows UK gay men's HIV infection rate soars despite testing

Efforts to reduce HIV transmission among UK gay and bisexual men over the past decade have failed, according to a new study.

The research published in today’s Lancet (Feb .1) shows that infection rates have remained stable despite increased testing and treatment.

While there has been a four-fold increase in testing rate and an advance in treatment uptake from 69 to 80 percent, new infections in England and Wales have flat-lined at 2,300 to 2,500 a year.

In Michigan, effort to enforce HIV "health threat" law raises questions

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan health officials are using HIV surveillance technologies to assist in enforcing a "health threat" law that makes it illegal for HIV-positive people to have sex without disclosing their status.

A new University of Michigan study reveals that health officials employ the state's names reporting database, alongside partner services referrals, for law enforcement purposes. However, this is bad social policy for a variety of reasons, said Trevor Hoppe, the study's author and a doctoral candidate in sociology and women's studies.

Princes William and Harry back gay-run HIV charity

LONDON -- Britain’s pin-up Princes, William and Harry, have been asked to be ambassadors for the country’s leading HIV charity, Terrence Higgins Trust (THT).

The organization was started when Terry Higgins became one of the first to die of AIDS in the UK three decades ago. It was founded by his partner Rupert Whitaker and their friends.

Now the gay-run charity is celebrating its 30th anniversary. And William, Duke of Cambridge and his playboy brother Prince Harry have sent a message of support.

In response, the charity has said it would love them to become "ambassadors" for THT.

HIV vaccine breakthrough?

A team of scientists at the Center for the AIDS Program of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA) found that two South African women infected with HIV were able to produce antibodies that neutralized and killed 88% of known strains of the virus.

Penny Moore, one of the lead scientists of the study published on Sunday in the journal Nature Medicine, said: ‘We're hoping we can use this information to develop a vaccine that prompts the body's immune system to make broadly neutralising antibodies’.
