SDGLN Poll: Big majority of readers say it should be a crime to hide HIV status from sex partners

SAN DIEGO – A significant majority of the readers of San Diego Gay & Lesbian News who took our poll say they believe that it should be a crime to hide one’s HIV status from a sex partner.

Our poll question was: Should it be a crime to not tell a sex partner that you are HIV-positive?

The results, which are not scientific, reveal that 68% of readers believe that it should be a crime to not tell a sex partner that you are HIV-positive, while 32% disagree with that position.

Canada's high court: Not always a crime to hide HIV status to sex partners

OTTAWA, Canada -- If you wear a condom and have a "low load" of the HIV virus, it is not a crime if you do not tell your sex partner about your status, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled today.

However, the court seemed to imply by its ruling that if you are HIV-positive and engage in dangerous behavior with your sex partner, such as not wearing a condom and not disclosing your status and not taking reasonable steps to avoid transmitting the virus, that you could be sued.

Being Alive San Diego seeks volunteers

SAN DIEGO -- Being Alive is in need of volunteers in different capacities.

Anyone interested can go to Being Alive, 4070 Centre St, in Hillcrest and fill out an application.

Volunteers are needed in the Helping Hands Moving Services area. The agency provides free moving services to clients facing eviction, and assists them in finding affordable housing or sign up for rental subsidies. Being Alive also provides all the necessary supplies to complete the move prior to becoming homeless and disrupting medical care.

In NYC, one HIV-positive man is dead, three sick with invasive meningococcal disease

NEW YORK -- Health officials in New York City have issued a warning about invasive meningococcal disease that has killed one HIV-positive man and sickened three other HIV-positive men within the last month.

New "m2mPower" program to address HIV/AIDS and gay men

WASHINGTON -- Thanks to a new cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), AIDS United is launching the first phase of its comprehensive “m2mPower “initiative designed to reach what the CDC calls the "population most severely affected by HIV" with targeted capacity-building support, access to care programs and policy/advocacy activities.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Change blood donation rules for men who have sex with men

It is well known that 20% of gay men are HIV-positive and that 25% of HIV-positive people are unaware of their positive status. This means that roughly 5% of gay men are HIV-positive and they don't even know it.

This is even more alarming when you consider that POZ reported that in "the U.S., an estimated 50% of new infections come from the 25% of positive people who do not know their status ..."

Supporters can go online HERE and look for the vote button and then do a search for Being Alive. It takes about 30 seconds to vote and if you share the giving fund you can receive an extra vote.
